“Value For Money”
Reviewed September 1, 2012

Stayed at the Golf Links House for one night (24th August) as I was attending a Wedding Reception that night at the Slieve Donard Hotel, where I feel even with discounted rates the Slieve would have been overly priced. The cost of the room for myself and wife was £60 and included Breakfast. The lady we dealt with on our arrival was the same lady as I had spoken to on the phone to make the booking a couple of weeks earlier, and she was again helpful and pleasant.
The room was clean and the window backed on to one of the local Golf Courses (the Mourne I think). Although my wife didn't partake in the breakfast, I certainly did as I needed to "line my stomach" for a second Wedding on the Saturday (attending Weddings in Ireland on consecutive days is not recommended!!). The staff at breakfast were pleasant and helpful and the food on offer was a choice of Cereal, Fresh Fruit Salad etc., followed by either Tea or Coffee, Fruit Juice and the good old "Irish Fry".
Although our stay was only for one night, we would have no hesitation in either recommending the Golf Links or staying there again.Although other reviewers have complained about the distance from the town, we found the price of a Taxi to be only £3.50 to £4.00 and that was at 1.30 on the Saturday morning.
As regards their comments about an agressive old lady (being of Irish origin myself), I didn't find this to be the case. I think perhaps it is the accent which may to some people sound sharp and as regards being asked too many questions, I feel this is just trying to be friendly - well at least that is my opinion.
Thank You to the Owners and Staff and hopefully see you again in the future!! RayJ

Liked best - Parking, outside of town, kids entertainment?!

Underwhelmed meal out that cost too much, expected more going on the reviews I'd read before booking! Decor is dated, arrived in for a meal we booked, most of the dining room was empty but we were shoved into a table right next to a large party, we had two small children and my elderly mother with us, so one of the kids were sitting out in the aisle in the way of the staff wandering past with hot drinks and food! Seemed senseless, mentionned this to the manager but he made some excuse that other parties had booked the other tables, however noone else arrived in during our meal. Cutlery and glasses were dirty, the wall paper in the dining room was filthy with splashes of food from previous diners obviously!! The kids meal came out on a plate that was roasting hot, had to ask for a separate bowl to put the dinner in and the cream on the dessert was sour. Toilets were clean, but the baby change table was most certainly not! Apart from all that the service was really friendly, cant remember his name tho! Best part of our experience tbh, kept the kids entertained! Dont think we'll be returning again in a hurry!

Hi Firstly, as with all contributors we wish to thank you for taking the time to review our business. We are however a little confused with some of the points. We cannot understand if the restaurant was empty how you managed to be beside a large party? We are a busy working restaurant and I'm afraid its a necessity for our staff to be carrying hot food and drinks. I think it would be much more of a concern if they weren't? Our staff are trained to a very high standard and we thankfully have never had any accidents in the restaurant and are especially careful when kids are present, but we find as long as they remain seated they are never in any more danger than they would be in their own house. That said we are sorry we couldn't place you at another table due to those being booked, but maybe a simpler solution would have been to place the kids away from the aisle and perhaps sat there yourself?
I'm sorry the decor was not to your liking, The whole entrance foyer and restaurant were re-decorated eighteen months ago with a new classic colour scheme, but we understand everyone has different tastes. Part of the refurb involved using wallpaper in parts of the restaurant and we do agree this wasn't the best idea as wasn't able to withstand the rigours of daily cleaning and is to be replaced after the busy season. Were again apologise for the hot plate on which yours child's meal was presented. We do serve all our meals on hot plates. Kids plates are warmed to 67 degrees as we find it keeps their meal hot while eating it. But we can accommodate cold plates on request. With regards to the cream we have looked into it and have had no complaints regarding cream, so i'm not sure what the problem was.
Out toilet areas are cleaned and checked at regular intervals during the day but we do rely on customers to let us know if they are not up to standard in the interim periods, which I trust you done at the time.
We are glad however that you found our staff helpful and entertaining as this is secondary only to the food, this is a very important part of the experience and something we are quite proud of. The staff member in question, that dealt with you that day, was not in a managerial position, but we are glad you felt he was of that caliber. Our main regret however is that you didn't mention some of these points at the time, and they could have been so easily rectified rather than using this forum. We do hope this addresses some of your concerns that we can welcome you back in the future and that you can experience the level of service and standards that as you say say everyone is raving about.

Stayed here on 30th june and had a lovely time. The Golflinks had such a relaxed atmosphere, as four mummies away for a stressfree night thats what we definitely got! On arrival we were greeted by Eileen who was so welcoming and instantly I felt at home. The rooms were way beyond our expectations and as one of us is a travel agent and well travelled suggested it was more like a hotel. We stayed for a cocktail very reasonably priced and a comfortable bar. Beds were extremly clean and comfy. Breakfast was great and excellent choice very pleasant staff. Have booked a room again this weekend for my hubbys birthday. Looking forward.

9 of us had dinner on the 15th June 2012. 6 stayed overnight. The meal was excellent, the hospitality was second to none. The staff were friendly, courtious and very professional. Paddy you were off that night, but you should have no worries about how your staff conduct themselves even when you are not there. Will call again soon.
Thanks Paddy. xo

My chum and I wanted to go to Newcastle just for one night to destress. The B and B was super! The room had a lovely view of the Mournes, a double and a single bed, bathroom with a shower and tea and coffee making facilities. The beds were warm and very comfortable. The following morning there was a great variety for breakfast, it was served promptly and was piping hot. The owner had lots of time to chat to us and we felt very relaxed and at home. We totally enjoyed our stay and I will definately be back!!!

Room Tip: Room 5 has a super view of the mountains!

We had 4 rooms booked for a weekend surprise birthday stay for my dad. First of all we were made to feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. The meal and the service in the restaurant was excellent and very well priced and a great nights craic in the bar that night. The rooms were very clean and although not fancy they weren't basic either. Breakfast was great. The Golf Links has the homely feeling and value for money you receive in a B&B but offers so much more. My parents loved this place so much they have already returned and had as great an experience second time round. I'll also return, hopefully soon. Many thanks to all concerned for making our stay memorable.

Many thanks for taking time to review our premises. Your review pretty much sums up our business. We don't claim to be luxury hotel, just a guest house doing their best to give a good welcome with good service. We are glad to hear some of you party returned again as that is the best compliment anyone can give. We look forward to welcoming you back yourself in the near future. Thanks again.
