Dated, but friendly and clean. Had I stayed the one night, my review may not have been as good, however after staying for 14 nights, I found the staff, facilities and welcome in general at tbe Avoca to be excellent - very clean every where, clean sheets and towels daily (most big hotels don't do this) very very friendly and helpful staff. Yes it's dated, and yes it has it's quirks, but if you want a comfortable, centrally located hotel, at moderate prices, then this is the place. I will be going back to see more of the area, and re visit the Avoca

I stayed for a couple nights in September and had a warm & cozy basic room that had a great view of the sea. Access to the Mourne Mtns was handy enough. I walked outside the door and was up and down Slieve Donard in time for tea. Breakfast was included in the price. Although it wasn't to my taste, it's a good value for room and board. Staff were super accommodating. In terms of cleanliness, I'd prefer not to have busted out the babywipes to wipe off dust. Nevertheless, I'd stay there again because it's a great value with convenient access to the mountains. I have no problem with stairs, but for someone who does, this hotel would not be the best choice. The Seasalt Deli around the corner is fabulous (breakfast & dinner). You've got the mountains and the sea in Newcastle and the Avoca Hotel is a good gateway.

Room Tip: If you're headed to the mountains and are seeking a basic, budget-friendly room, Avoca's a g...

Sort of like a Best Western. OK but dated . Breakfast was a basic Irish. parking can be a problem and if you get a room with an oceanfront view the traffic and people noise can be an issue. All in all for a last minute stay it worked out. Oh yeah, no elevator for your bags. Pack light

I stayed at the Avoca with my children and husband as we were in Newcastle for a wedding. We knew we were literally only going to be sleeping there so didn't see the point in choosing one of the more 'luxurious' expensive hotels. However, if I was coming into town for a few days, I would still consider this very friendly hotel.

We had a family room which consisted of a double bed and bunk beds. There was plenty of room and, most importantly, it was immaculately clean. From the large bay window you have the sea directly in front of you and the mountains to the side. Few 5 star establishments can boast about such a view!

Breakfast in the morning was huge! I particularly enjoyed the porridge and the children were more than happy with their french toast (which they drowned in syrup when we weren't looking!) No one was at all hungry until teatime.

It is true that the decor is old fashioned in the extreme, but the beds are really comfortable, the breakfasts amazing and the staff friendly and helpful, so I don't think you could find better value for money in the area.

Room Tip: We were on the top floor facing the front. Far enough from the bar not to hear any noise and a fabu...

look for a last minute boking the place was pretty awesome, staff where lovely, food was great, the room was spacious and had everything you needed in it, apart from being in room 11 which over looked the car park and caught the smell of the extractor fans from the hotels bar, the smell was pretty bad but hey it wont ruin your holiday put it that way. all in all was a great stay with nothing too dramatic going on, but stragely the shower had no shower curtain so the floor gets a wee bit wet but i mean its not the end of the world, would definatly recommend the place was just what we needed :)
