Worth the effort to find this abbey. We had the place all to ourselves on a wonderful sunny day. The surroundings are well tended.

“Interesting Religious Site, Essential that the Excellent 'Monk' Guide is on Duty, Check Beforehand”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2012

Hi,

We stumbled upon Inch Abbey having taken the short train ride from Downpatrick Station on the seasonal steam / diesel loco. This attraction allows an alternative route to the abbey and might make your visit a little more interesting should the train be running (see my review for the train / Museum also)

Inch Abbey, which is now in ruins, is steeped in history and top marks to the guide who, dressed as a monk gives you a short verbal tour of the ruins and seems to know all his ‘stuff’. There is no fee to visit the site with perhaps a small tip for the monk being the only outlay should you decide to do so.

Beware that if visiting there is no facilities in the form of shelter, toilet or shop, simply a few information boards and a few park benches.

There is free limited parking just down the lane.

If trip advisor allowed I would rate this attraction 3.5 stars and have been kind with the 4 given.

Inch Abbey is worth a visit, perhaps wasted should you have very young children with a limited attention span.

Just outside Downpatrick. Ruins of the abbey in a lovely quiet setting. You could also visit Strule Wells also in the area, Delamont Country Park or Castle Ward.
