Had a great time here at Hallowe'en half term, six of us stayed here (my husband and myself with our two wee girls, and his parents).
The house itself is perfect - a newly built bungalow with 4 very spacious bedrooms, lovely entrance lounge, and fantastic kitchen/ diner with living space. The 3 bathrooms were immaculate, with super facilities to cater for wheelchair-bound guests. The pictures on their website show that it is a beautiful house, but don't do it justice in terms of size - there are 2 three piece suites in the entrance lounge, and plenty if space to spare. The same can be said for the rest of the house.
There was an arrivals basket of fruit, fresh bread, milk and butter for us to enjoy, all the "trivial" essentials (tea, coffee, salt, pepper etc), and same can be said for cleaning products etc. Catherine and Dessie were great, on hand and willing to assist if required. They were great hosts and went above and beyond our expectations.
This was our first visit to the area, and there is a wealth of things to do, particularly if you enjoy being outdoors, with Castlewellan Forest Park being a five minute walk away, and all that the Mournes has to offer.
We all really enjoyed our stay here, and could not recommend it enough - we look forward to returning. Thank you Catherine and Dessie :-)

At arrival we (group of 5 Dutch golfers) were welcomed by Catherine and a burning open fireplace.
The quality of the new built house is outstanding . Everything is there . Drying room: four excellent bedrooms with excellent beds and three roomy bathrooms with powerdouches .Big kitchen and diningtablewith open fireplace. This house is also perfect for disabeled persons. We had is nice chat with the husband of Catherine , Dessie, who told us stories about Ireland and Irish whiskey...
All of us were raving about our stay.
After arriving at newton lodge for the second year running me and my family were welcomed with the hospitality like no other..the proprietors "des and kath" certainly no how to do there job.one of the main reasons for initially going to newton lodge is they cater for disabled people and cater for them they do,my brother suffers with pp ms and he had the most comfortable stay possible the house all the latest facilities that make it so much easier for a disabled person therefor makes the Holliday so much easier and enjoyable for the whole family.it is a very spacious modern homely house in a very pleasant quiet environment, which is only a two min walk from the main st were there are plenty of shops cafés and bars ect and a lovely big park to spend some time.over all this is a place not to be missed and I can't wait for our return in the near future.........thanx Desmond and Katherine x
From the moment we arrived at Newton Lodge we knew we'd made a good decision regarding staying there. The garden was beautifully tended and landscaped, the welcome friendly, warm and sincere, and the accommodation - fantastic! The house is inviting spacious, airy, immaculate and has everything a self-catering home should have.
The kitchen/dinning room open plan layout is perfect for all to gather, eat and talk after a day of sightseeing, while the cozy living room (just off the dinning room) with TV and fireplace is a great place to relax and plan for the next day activities! The bedrooms are comfortable, spacious and attractively decorated and the bathrooms spotlessly clean, modern, and beautifully tiled.
An added bonus is the location - within walking distance of Castlewellan, the Park, lake and castle and only 5 miles from Newcastle, Tollymore Park and the beautiful Mourne Mountains. Belfast also is only about 45 minutes drive away.
Already looking forward to our next stay and to more exploring of the local countryside.

As avid travelers, we are always looking to catch a glimpse into the lives of locals wherever we travel. Newton Lodge allowed us to truly immerse ourselves in the rich culture and history of the area. Immediately upon arrival, we were welcomed like family by the owners who live in a beautiful house adjacent to the lodge. They made sure every last detail was accounted for and absolutely PERFECT!
The Lodge is newly built and very well appointed. The furnishings are contemporary and very comfortable. The fully equipped kitchen has beautiful granite countertops and an open concept design with a large dining area that opens up to the family room. The family room is an ideal spot to unwind after a long day of sightseeing, where you can curl up on the comfortable leather sofa and enjoy a bottle of wine in front of the wood burning fireplace. We felt like we were in a 5 star luxury hotel, but the best part was that we were in our own private house!
The bedrooms are equally comfortable, with lovely bed linens and ample space to unpack your suitcases. No detail was overlooked in the design of this house, even down to the beautiful tile work in the bathrooms! The Lodge also provides impressive accommodations for guests with physical impairments or limited mobility. One of the guest rooms is equipped with a state of the art ceiling track-guided lift, to help guests move from the sleeping area into the handicap accessible bathroom. It's incredible to see how much though went into designing every detail of this guest home.
Lastly, the Lodge is perfectly situated in Castlewellan, which is a great base location for exploring the beauty of Northern Ireland! The owners were born and raised in the area, and offer a wealth of knowledge about local attractions, including castles, museums, outdoor activities, nearby towns of interest, and local restaurants. They guided us to sites that we never would have found on our own - some that predate the pyramids! There are places only locals know, that no travel book can take you! There are so many amazing sights to see throughout the breathtakingly beautiful countryside surrounding the Lodge! During our stay, we rented a car and toured Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The Lodge owners provided us with driving directions, tips, and recommendations for places to visit along the way. I can't say enough about how WONDERFUL our stay at the Netwon Lodge was! We can't wait to come back, and hope to bring family and friends for a group trip to the Lodge!

Our family (2 adults and 2 toddlers) have stayed at Newton Lodge twice and would not hesitate to stay there again.
The house is well laid out with plenty of space, you are not confined to one or two rooms as in a hotel, you have a lovely kitchen diner with modern appliences which forms a great hub for the family to enjoy time together.
There is a separate washing/drying area, so if you go out to enjoy the lovely Co Down countryside you have somewhere to let boots dry out etc.
The lounge area is very spacious and has a large TV.
The bedrooms are very comfortable with spacious wardrobes and drawers for those who like to unpack their cloths.
The house has been geared towards people with disabilities, and though we did not make use of these facilities we could see that they would be very useful. The winch from the bathroom to the bed in one of the bed rooms looks like it would save a lot of hard work.
The other bathrooms are well fitted with great showers.
Cots and highchairs were provided to make our stay at Newton Lodge as easy and enjoyable as possible
Castlewellan is a great location for those wishing to visit Ireland, 40mins to Belfast and 1hr 1/2 to Dublin.
As you can tell we have enjoyed our time at Newton Lodge, the house is very clean and the owners were very helpful and made us feel welcome in their guest house. They were on hand to provide us with ideas on where to visit.
We very much enjoyed going for walks around the Castlewellan forest park and coming back to a comfortable house and a cup of tea in front of a log fire, things don’t get much better than that.
