“Thursday night on Restaurant Week”

A nice surprise when the Bistro next door was full. The only downside was that I was too full for a desert. The service was spot on, the place spotlessly clean and the food cooked to a very high standard.

“Pre-theatre chew”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

I prefer my restaurants casual, busy and with a buzz. On the night we went, admittedly for pre-theatre, it was quiet at that time so the lack of punters meant it was all a bit strained with waitresses having too much time on their hands.
So the wine glasses were constantly being topped up which was pretty annoying.

On to the food. My starter had a long and fancy name that I cant remember. All you need to know was it was about 2 inches of fresh mackerel pan fried and set on some sliced tomato. Unseasoned and fairly bland – no cooking skill needed there.

For main I had the rump of lamb. I think the chef’s aim was to serve it pink. For pink read chewy and fatty.

By the way, the two course pre-theatre does NOT come as a complete meal. You would have to buy a side dish. We got the boiled new potatoes – pretty boring stuff in know, at £3.50. Not extortionate (yes I know you could buy a couple of bags of potatoes for that but this is a posh restaurant) but a bit irritating that it is not a compete meal in the first instance.

With wine the bill came to over £50 for two. It was just supposed to be a nice bite to eat and keep warm and relax before the show. You can get better quality and value elsewhere in Belfast

Thank you for taking the time to post your review, all feedback is greatly appreciated, whether positve or otherwise.

We endeavour to source local produce to support local people and often tends to be more expensive than comparable produce from other countries, but the taste, we feel speaks for itself.

Our pre thatre menu is designed in so that diners will have room for three courses and does not come with extra sides for this reason. We also feel that our pre theatre menu, priced at £15.50 for two courses and £18.50 for three courses represents excellent value.

We apologise that your experience fell short of the high standards we normally pride ourselves on.

Kindest Regards,

James Street South

“Great atmosphere and great food and service”
Reviewed October 21, 2012

My wife treated me to a meal in the James Street South Brasserie this weekend.
I had never eaten in James Street before and we were both extremely impressed with the quality of the food the service, the value for money and best of all the vibrant atmosphere.
Great experience all round and I can't wait to go back :)

“Extremely Average”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

We went here recently to sample the pre-theatre menu which was advertised at £15.95 for two courses. The food was very nicely presented but it all tasted very ordinary (just fried) and definitely no exciting flavours. We were advised to order extra vegetables for the main course as they said there would not food in the main course so I felt that was a bit of a con, I would have preferred them to charge a little bit more and at least include a tiny bit of veg. The staff were very polite and friendly and the surroundings were nice but unless they make this restaurant a bit more exciting I won't be going back to try their a la carte menu.

“GREAT FOOD BUT AWFUL MUSIC!”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

Modern restaurant close to the hotels in Great Victoria Street and the city centre. We arrived without booking on a Tuesday evening. Service was excellent and staff friendly and helpful regarding our questions. My partner had seafood and I ordered pork. The food was outstanding.
Our only gripe would be the music which was geared towards a younger diner whilst most clients in the establishment were in their 50's. A gentleman who was leaving commented that the food was delicious but the music 'cruel'. We left as soon as we had finished our main course without ordering desert or coffee and escaped to the more pleasant sounds of Belfast street life.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your meal with us and that the staff were attentive.

I can only apologise that the music was not to your taste. If you bring it to our attention we can change the playlist to something a little more subdued.

We hope to see you again soon.
