Owner description: The Crumlin Road Gaol dates back to 1845 and closed it's doors as a working prison in 1996. After extensive renovations the gaol has re opened as a visitor attraction and conference centre. Today you can take a guided tour of the prison and hear about the history of the site from when women and children were held within it's walls through to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners and learn about why the decision was taken to close the prison.During the tour of the gaol you will be taken by your tour guide to visit the underground tunnel that used to connect the gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, you will get a chance to sit in the Governor's chair, view all the wings from the circle and of course pay a visit to the condemned mans cell before seeing the execution cell where the majority of the 17 men were hanged.

We visited the gaol and joined the tour.
The tour guide was Brendan who was very informative and knowledgeable and he covered everything at a steady pace. The tour was a lot longer than I thought.
in my opinion it's a shame the gaol has been too over updated, all fresh and newly painted, looking through to the wings that you cannot visit, you see how it must have really looked, with the nets etc still in place, and the coldness of the areas
I did thoroughly enjoy the tour though

Thank staffscasey

Was very interesting, Brenden was very good at explaining what life was like in there from when it first opened, until it was no longer fit for purpose. The hanging cell is very errie

Found the tour very interesting and Brendan our tour guide was very good and full of info. the goal has been very well restored and the tunnel from the goal to the court house is interesting but the hanging cell is a bit creepy.

Crumlin Road Gaol was the main prison in Belfast for well over 100 years, right through the famine up to the recent troubles. The tour is guided and includes the administration block, the circle and one of the wings and the tunnel connected to the courthouse across the road.

Our guide was excellent - very knowledgeable and willing to answer questions. It was overall an interesting experience.

Other than looking at the structure of the building there was no additional information like storyboards etc for you to linger over. The wing that we walked through has been very "sanitised" for visitors - fresh paint, some flooring replaced etc and didn't for me represent the starkness of what the prison was really like, in the way that Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin did for me. Looking down into one of the wings that hasn't been 'prepared for visitors' gave me a much greater sense of what it was like - the paintwork was less than perfect, the 'suicide nets' still in place (to prevent prisoners jumping from the upper floors). It looked more authentic from a distance.

Overall it was interesting, great tour guide and good value at £7.50 per adult admission. If you're looking for a history of the conflict, this isn't it though - it is only briefly mentioned in terms of prisoner segregation, protests and escapes.

There is parking available but you have to know about it to find it. Coming from Carlisle Circus up crumlin Road, drive past the Gaol and turn right after the garage and right again into the carpark. There is a coffee stand but we took the first tour at 10 am and arrived 15 minutes early and it wasn't open and still not open when we finished up around 11.

Wear a jacket - it's cold down the wings!

The tour of the Crum was really interesting. Our guide was very informative and friendly. We were allowed to go into a couple of rooms in the administration building. After the admin. building, we went to C block. Looking at the history and conditions of the jail was extremely interesting.
