“Worth every penny!!”
Reviewed October 6, 2013 via mobile

Just returned from our second visit to The Merchant. Enjoyed every minute of it! We have stayed now in both the Art Deco and Victorian style rooms...art deco is definitely much bigger but the Victorian room has still something special about it, a little darker than the Art Deco room though. The staff in this hotel are excellent and you are treated like royalty from the minute you arrive to the minute you leave. We paid for parking at the hotel which cost £40 for two nights but we found this to be so handy as we didnt have to worry about finding somewhere safe to park the car. Breakfast in The Great Room is second to none and definitely worth paying a little extra for! Returning on the 6th Dec for the weekend to enjoy the Christmas markets and beautiful decor, can't wait! Book this hotel, it is expensive but you will not regret it!!

We booked this hotel for a night after attending a function and checked in to the CS Lewis Suite. Our first impression of the room is the decor of the room is just simply stunning and beautiful. Retro but with a modern twist. The multi-coloured carpet, beautiful red and white flower wall paper and the well-selected furniture really make such a wonderful combination for the room. As we have a suite, the living room area is really delightful. Although it is not too big, but attention to details and decoration in the living room make you feel like you are staying at an exquisite room in a palace. When we have the breakfast on the following day, I would say the muesli is one of the best that I ever had among all the hotels that i have stayed so far. The staff are very helpful and the location is very central in Belfast. What can I say, it is a beautiful gem !

Stayed in Room 208 on 25th September for my birthday treat. The room was large and had five windows, antique furniture which made it very homely. Bathroom was separate but very dark. Service in the cocktail bar was poor as i had soup presented with no bread so i had to remind the waiter of this by the time it came the soup was cold. The hot tub is perfect overlooking Belfast and the staff are excellent. The Great Room is the best! I loved the breakfast and the roof is so beautiful. Unfortunately, we could not access the roof garden but improvements are badly needed in this area which a five star hotel should have. All in all a lovely overnight stay but overpriced.

Just home after a one night stay in a beautiful Victorian room.we stayed in rm 211,lovely with 3 big windows, decor rich and luxurious.we had dinner and cocktails in the cocktail bar, service was impeccable and the attention to detail went that extra mile.we stayed for an event at the arena nearby, this proved to be perfect, when it was over we were back in the hotel by the log fire with a drink before others were even out of the car park!!breakfast made to order and its no wonder too see why the great room has won awards.we topped our stay off with a visit to the spa,it was the cherry in the cake, being a pair of busy young professionals who work hard the merchant gave us the re-charge we needed.top class hotel!

Rooms were totally great. Comfortable, clean and the vanity was a terrific touch after struggling to find a place to blow dry my hair through Ireland. Super beds. Very clean. The bathrooms were great -- would have liked the towels in better proximity to the shower. They are over the bathtub and I am sure most people use showers these days.
The dining room is gorgeous and food is artfully presented and delicious. The service is very good. However, these folks do not know how to make a decent martini according to customer's directions. And the tiny, tiny martini that they do manage to produce costs close to $18. Yikes.
The décor -- by way of ladies of the art deco/nouveau period on each door is tacky and resembles a bordello. Otherwise great stay.

Room Tip: Away from main street.

our second visit and first afternoon tea. quite expensive but what you expect for such luxurious surroundings. a lot of cakes and scones and great quality, I would have preferred more sandwiches as amount was very small but good quality. lots of teas to choose from and cocktails or champagne available at extra charge. well worth a visit for the experience but you can have a similar experience for half the price at their other hotel in portaferry just a 55 minute drive down the coast and parking is easier too.

We do stay at the merchant maybe 3 or 4 times a year but I took my husband for his Birthday and eat in the Great Room Restaurant, it was fabulous, they even did a little Birthday Cake and took it to the room, I would highly recomment this fine establishment to anyone visiting Belfast it is second to none from you enter until you leave.

Room Tip: All the rooms are excellent so any room would be satisfactory
