My sisters 50th Birthday was the special occasion & The Merchant lived up to its reviews.
We were made to feel special. Nothing was too much bother.
Balloons & chocolates in my sisters room, was a lovely touch.
We will definitely go back.

The Hotel
The hotel is part converted bank, part modern extension. All communal areas are beautifully maintained, as are the guest rooms. Staff are welcoming, and we were provided with a good orientation prior to being shown to our rooms. The Victorian styled rooms were nice, albeit quite small, with all the usual inclusions of tea & coffee, slippers, robes, etc.

Bars and Restaurants
Although we didn't dine in the hotel, there are three main options - their formal restaurant (with stunning gold leaf ceiling), a jazz bar (Bertie's) and a wine bar (The Cloth Ear). The service at the hotel's main cocktail bar was attentive, however the cocktails themselves quite average. See my separate reviews of The Bar and The Cloth Ear for further details.

Noise
Ear plugs are provided by the hotel, and upon retiring to our rooms at 10pm, it was clear to 'hear' why. Both our rooms were located on Level 1, immediately above one of the hotel's bars and across the road from another. The noise was reported to the front desk, who then visited the primary offender and successfully had it reduced. However a base noise (made worse by the wooden ceiling in the bar below) continued and even with subsequent phone calls to the desk did not cease until midnight. Upon discussing with the Duty Manager in the morning, they were initially quite dismissive - only upon pressing was a discount on the room then given.

In summary, the hotel is luxurious and is in a great central location, however the noise is the loudest we'd experienced of any 5 star city hotels worldwide. If you are staying, I HIGHLY recommend ensuring you are allocated a quiet room - although with bars on 3 sides of the hotel am unsure this is possible.

Stayed for one night and loved it. The room was beautiful, staff are fantastic and their customer service is brilliant. Other hotels should take note. From the porter who takes your bag to your room the customer service never varies. Bar staff, waiting staff and reception staff could not be more helpful, polite or kind. We always recommend The Merchant and will definitely be back.

We stayed here for 3 nights in the Macneice suite. I would highly recommend upgrading to a suite. The room was spacious and well appointed and the bed was terrific. We had daily breakfast included in our rate and that too was delicious. Most places offer buffets, but here It was a cooked to order breakfast which was nice. The hotel is convenient to Victoria square and many area restaurants too although we had a very good dinner in the great room too. Overall if you are staying in Belfast, this is a great place to stay. They have a spa n gym also but was too busy touring to use.

Stayed for one night. Friends in Australia has sent us voucher for Christmas. Stayed in the Larkin suite. Everything went smoothly. On arrival bags collected, and we were shown to check in area. Check in person introduced herself by name and welcomed us to hotel in a sincere mannor. Valet parking is great and you can take your car in and out without extra charge. Belfast is a small city and everything is in within walking distance. We were escorted to suite. The suites are all on the same floor. Larkin suite is great. Retains the high ceilings and massive windows. Room had black out blinds and we heard we noise from the street. We did not eat in hotel, but did have drinks in the bar. The bar area has a great vibe and was buzzing. Drinks at costly but the surroundings are fantastic, great spot to people watch. Turn down at night. Some nice touches, I had left my book on the bed side locker and they left a book mark, my suit was hung up in wardrobe. I love these touches show that staff are highly trained. Breakfast is served in an amazing room, and not a buffet stand in sight. Everything is brought to the table, I had the pancakes and they even warmed the maple syrup. Check out was busy, but again well done and our car was waiting with bags safely in boot. We will definately return. Belfast is a great destination for domestic and overseas visitors alike. Special mention to Michael and Louise in reception, you are a credit to the hotel.

Great location for shopping in Belfast city centre. Only negative was being overcharged on the final bill but this was quickly sorted out. We will definitely be back!
