I spent the Easter week-end with my partner at the Merchant Hotel in central Belfast. We enjoyed our stay, loved the great service, appreciated the majestic surroundings of the dining room, but on balance were left feeling a little disappointed, and certainly overcharged.

We booked late, but managed to reserve a junior suite. The penalty for the late booking was a rack room rate of £850 for 3 nights. OK no room is ever worth the rack rate, but the rack rate for this room was seriously over the top. A price up to £200 per night would have been more appropriate to its quality and facilities. This could just be about avoiding room 319!!

As a suite it did have a separate seating area, but overall the area of the room was much smaller than you would ever expect of a suite. The bed was incredibly comfortable and gave us a great night’s sleep. The marbled bathroom was spacious with lots of large towels and a great shower over the bath. So most of the basics were there. Wifi in the room was free and very fast (as it was all over the hotel). The room, however, was gloomy because of its position in the garret of the hotel, with just two small windows high up in the wall. The dark furnishings and small table lamps did little to dispel the dullness of the room. A small wardrobe with just 6 hangers was just not big enough.

Service across the hotel was excellent. Everyone we met was courteous, smiling and helpful. Room service was prompt and efficient, but they couldn’t find any peanuts to go with our gin and tonics. Valet car parking and the luggage service worked incredibly well.

We ate breakfast in the main restaurant each morning. Great service, freshly cooked food; just an amazing location. The porridge with cream and honey is a must have.

On balance – a good 4 star hotel, recommended if you can get the right room, don’t pay more than £200 per night. I’d probably stay there again, but I’d look around for other options first.

Room Tip: Avoid room 319. Not a suite as billed - very dark and gloomy.

Just returned from a 1 night break in The Merchant. We had booked two rooms - 1 Art Deco and 1 Victorian.
We arrived at 2pm and the Art Deco room was ready, however the Victorian room wasn't ready until 3.30pm. This was disappointing as the checkin was 3pm so if we hadn't have had the other room we would've had to have waited in reception until 3.30pm.

The Art Deco room was spacious, modern and had beautiful views. The Victorian room was small with no view out the window. Beds in both rooms were very comfortable. In the Victorian room we had no hot water tap as it was air locked but this is a problem as it is over 40yrs old the plumbing system. This was explained by our porter. Shower and bath were lovely though.

We had a spa package: hydrotherapy usage and either a facial or back massage. Both treatments where fantastic and the spa staff where very pleasant. Pool was quite small but did the job. Roof top hot tub was lovely and had beautiful views over Belfast.

Breakfast was delicious with an excellent selection to suit everyone.

We used the car Parkin service - definitely worth the money and hassle free.

We had a very pleasant stay in the merchant and would recommend it to family and friends.

We stayed in the Merchant for our wedding anniversary in March. Living quite close to Belfast the Merchant was somewhere I'd always wanted to stay but had always ended up staying further afield. It was worth the wait. We got an amazing deal - £160 including dinner in the Great Room. But to be honest, having stayed here, I would pay a lot more for the same package.

The plus points:
- we satyed in a traditional room - lovely king bed. Decor was fab. Traditional roll top bath and an old bank safe for good measure highlighting the history of the place. Amenities were good.
- the food. Without shadow the best bit of the hotel. We had dinner in the Great Room - absolutely amazing. Food was impeccable. Service was fab. Nice atmosphere - not too busy or stuffy. Breakfast the next morning was just as good. Cooked fresh to order.
- the cocktail bar - great choice of cocktails with some different ones to try
- the service - I'm not big on service but the service here was great. The little touches made it a special stay

The areas for improvement:
- we didn't use the spa as it was mid week and we were in work however we did use the sauna and hot tub. Great idea but the outdoor tub wasn't working. A little disappointing but i suppose these things happen sometimes.
- our room was on the first floor. We could hear the people in the Cloth Ear below and it was only a Tuesday night. I expect it would be quite a noisy room at the weekend. The room was also on the same floor as some of the function rooms so you had people walking past your door until the early hours.

Room Tip: Stay away from 1st floor rooms.

This was a trip to celebrate our first wedding anniversay and did we pick the right venue? This hotel was nothing short of supberb!!! From the moment we arrived nothing was a problem to the professional, well trained staff who are a credit to the hotel. The car was taken away for parking and promptly returned on our departure(along with sweets left inside - a very nice touch!). The room was out of this world and had been kindly upgraded due to the event we were celebrating. Everything was clean and ready on time. The bed provided a great nights sleep. We also visited the roof top spa area which again was clean and tidy and allowed breathtaking views out over Belfast. Later in the evening we were in Burts bar which is part of the complex and entertainment was provided to add to the atmosphere which was already very pleasant and made our stay very special to us! Highly recommended to anyone wanting a break away with no problems and a really perfect experience!

Room Tip: Get one overlooking High St/Victoria St junction!

Stayed here for a treat for our 20th wedding anniversary. The staff at the hotel made our anniversary a very memorable one. Upon check in we were upgraded to a suite, it was absolutely beautiful. We had a delicious lunch in the cloth ear bar, again service was excellent. We then enjoyed a relaxing soak in the roof top hot tub, and sauna over looking Belfast. We went for pre dinner cocktails in the cocktail bar, beautiful bar with open fire and an extensive cocktail menu, they were by far the best cocktails we have ever had. We had dinner in Berts, lovely surroundings, amazing service but we have to be honest and say the food and wine let them down. It was all very bland with very little choice on the menu, but the staff were very friendly and attentive. Another little touch the hotel staff did, was to have the jazz band congratulate us on our 20 years of marriage and they brought out a plate with a candle and a selection of treats with Happy Anniversary wrote on it. When we got back to our room they had left a balloon, chocolates and a card for our anniversary. We were so impressed that from reception to restaurant to housekeeping all these little things were being done for us, it shows good communication between staff. A visit to the great room is a must, for breakfast or dinner this is such a stunning room. Overall its the attention to detail and the service the staff provide as well as the truly stunning building that make this a genuine 5 star hotel. So a big thank you to the hotel for making our anniversary very special one.
