As a group of 4 girls, we choose the urban retreat!

A friendly and warm welcome by reception, treated impeccably by staff but particularly by a professional, mannerly and witty guy, Kieran, who showed us to our rooms and made every effort to engage with us throughout our stay.

We spent 2 delightful hours in the hydrotherapy area, unwinding, before heading to the luxurious surroundings of the cocktail bar -worth the experience!

Top class customer service, decadent surroundings and will definitely will be back.

I visited recently with my mum, as a treat for her as she had not been to the hotel previously. The staff are impeccable and the room was busy with a very pleasant atmosphere. We were offered seating in the lower area but my mum preferred to sit in the raised dining area and this request was dealt with easily. The tea is delightful, with attentive staff and additional sandwiches available if required. There was live music playing which enhanced the afternoon. All in all a lovely afternoon....if a little pricey!

I treated my mum and sister and daughter to afternoon tea in the Merchant and paid over £90. I don't mind paying for something extra special and that's exactly what I expected afternoon tea to be in a hotel such as the merchant but I was very disappointed. The setting is undoubtedly beautiful in the great hall, and the table is lovely with silverware etc.. but the actual food on offer was of very poor standard. the whole experience just felt like a money making conveyor belt rather than an exceptional treat in a 5 star hotel

We had some sandwiches made with white bread - ham, salmon and egg, the egg sandwiches were hard around the edges where they had been sitting out for a while and the selection was overall very basic and nothing special - my children's lunchboxes are more exciting! The bread was a bit hard and cold and there were very few sandwiches although they did bring more when I asked. The scones were a bit dry and not warm and the top tier of pastries was very basic with no fresh cream.

The service was average and I had to stand up at the table twice to get the attention of a waiter/waitress, again not what I expect of a 5 star hotel and 10% service was added to our bill at the end as well as an extra charge for my 10 year old daughter to use a cup to share our tea.

Just very overpriced for what you get and very underwhelming. The place was packed though so either I'm too fussy or everyone was spending their Christmas vouchers!

Lovely haven on a cold wet winter Sunday. This is the place to chill out. We had walked the shore out at Whiteabbey and headed to the Merchant some for cocktails. The more mature and sensible in the group had delicious camomile and peppermint tea in sumptuous surroundings. Lovely fire and talented pianist soothing us. Will return!

Having stayed in the hotel recently, we didn't try afternoon tea. So it was an excuse for a return to the lovely merchant. Three of us booked in advance which was good as the great room was full at around 2.30. Staff were excellent, especially a young Scottish fella who served us. Tea choice was well explained, dietary requirements catered to very well. So much food, it's impossible to eat it all! So we had a couple of take away boxes, as did most people we seen leaving. Top ups of tea and food readily available. The great room is beautiful, and was warm and comfortable. Overall a really pleasant and relaxing experience. Even better as my brother had given us a voucher to pay for it! We had a look around the hotel, bar, reception and shop before we left! Sad we only had our cakes to take home and not a pair of Louboutins!

On the 30th of Dec last my partner and I stayed in the Merchant. Im a fairly straight forward sort of fella and felt a bit uncomfortable by the opulent surroundings and the service but I soon got over this due to the warmth of the service and a couple of tasty cocktails!
We had champagne afternoon tea which was set in the great room, a lovely atmosphere and setting but the food was nothing to write home about. Later on that evening the food we had in Berts Jazz Bar was beautiful (we got the Chateaubriand for two people)
It is also definitely worth a trip upstairs to the roof top hot tub but try to go at an off peak time cos it is not half as nice when your sharing it with 4/6 people.
If you are looking for a romantic city break than this place has to be top of your list.

Room Tip: We stayed in the CS lewis suite and it was very old world nice.

have stayed here 3 times over 2012. Without a doubt the best hotel in the country. Great staff, superb rooms, lovely and relaxing at all times.Would stay more often if money permitted. We go when we can. They also send offers etc via email regularly, just to entice.
My husband slept perfectly where he doesnt usually with back issues
