We recently stayed here for the first time and were not disappointed. Indeed, it's an absolutely grand hotel - stately, imposing exterior and art deco type interior - not normally my style, but it worked for a hotel. The rooms are incredibly plush though they are a bit on the dark and overdecorated side ( tassels hanging from ceiling to form a trim, theatre themed decor), but very roomy and cozy. You could hibernate in there! The bar is amazing, albeit pricey. Somehow you don't mind spending a ton for a drink when a charming Irishman spends 10 minutes preparing it in front of you while chatting you up. Definitely worth it. The service at the hotel was absolutely amazing. For instance, we wanted to find a certain type of pub one night and the bellhop gave us the perfect recommendation. We asked how to get there and he pointed the way. After detecting our puzzled looks, he insisted upon walking us to the corner to better point the way. When we still hesitated, he cheerfully said "follow me" and walked us all the way to the pub and literally through the door. Talk about service! (Love that guy - and I'm so sorry that I'm forgetting his name as he was wonderful - there dec. 27th-29th). Also, do not miss the gym/ spa. Note that the spa is downstairs, and the gym is on the roof. Notably, the sauna and hot tub are part of the gym ( read: rooftop). Do not miss an opportunity to soak in the rooftop hottub - pleasantly right across from the historic clock tower which will be at eye level. Fantastic. Would definitely recommend the hotel to others. It is not cheap, but was a great experience and we'd do it again!

Room Tip: We heard from other reviewers that rooms can be noisy, but ours was not. Might want to request a room that does not front a street if concerned about potential noise.

My wife and I had a fantastic relaxing break in this hotel from the 7th - 11th January, the Hotel staff are all so professional, efficient, pleasant and helpful, the food and service are exceptional and there is a variety of dining and entertainment - The Great Hall,Berts Jazz Club and The Soul Night in The Cloth Ear are all excellent and worth a visit. This is our second break in this Hotel and the standard is what we expect from 5 star.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Art Deco room on both occasions and these are excellent.

Stayed here for one night in December with my partner, have been to the hotel before for dinner but staying there was something else. Staff are professional, efficient and welcoming. The room was beautiful with a massive bathroom and luxury fabrics. Dinner in the great hall was fantastic, fine dining at its best. Went to the cocktail bar after, it was quite busy... there is normally excellent table service in the cocktail bar but this was very slow (waited 30 mins to get a drink) not really expected for an award winning bar. As part of the package we could avail of the hydrotherapy spa...this was an added bonus and well worth it. Also make a trip up to the hot tub, it really is something special. Overall a real treat and a great way to spend a special occasion.

we have stayed at the Merchant previously as we visit Belfast as a couple each year around my birthday.
The Merchant is an experience which never diminishes with each stay, we have stayed in many hotels throughout the world and nothing has matched up to the stay at the Merchant. The jazz bar was delightful and we thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and style of the staff. The rooms are always faultless together with the staff. Truly wonderful Heather Fox

Room Tip: Difficult because we have always had lovely rooms with wonderful bathrooms.

This Hotel was perfect for our 2 night getaway from normal life. Myself and my partner are locals as you can see from our name however fancied a break and wanted to try The Merchant.

The room was FANTASTIC, deco double Queen room and it was huge!!! The bathroom was amazing and the little things make all the differance here. The staff were great, friendly and very respectful. T
he rooms were cleaned once in the morning then we realised once again at turn down time, and get this - I left a book on the bedside nightstand, when i returned to the room for the evening i found the staff had placed a Merchant bookmark inside the cover, VERY impressive stuff guys.
TV with complimentary movies blew us away, great titles including Shawshank, Goodfellas, The Shining, Kill Bill, the list goes on, didnt even ned the DVD player we requested which was also complimentary which impressed me. So many 5* Hotels get the arm in with goods and services but The Merchant gave us a lot of value for our money already paid.
Also the night before we left we had a personal letter from the GM. First time iv experienced that kind of customer service.

The two TINY point annoyed me was the WiFi, although complimentary, you have to sign in every time you log in and out of your phone/tablet, iPhone users will be vexed with this in time.

Also the food, im a big guy, i like my grub so the breakfast fry that was 1 slice of bacon, 2 tiny sausages and tiny circle of potato bread and soda are obviously A La Carte kind of portions and i could have eaten 5 plates, but im nitpicking cos im greedy.

This is a Lovely Hotel that i will definately visit again (hopefully to the same room).

Room Tip: Room 330 was absolutely huge, book it!!!
