After cycling 50 miles or so with full panniers etc. we arrived in Belfast ready for a couple of days of revival in the five star Merchant hotel.
We weren't disappointed !
Our art deco suite has some nice features including a nice big tub which is ideal for soaking tired mussels and a very comfortable bed.
The cocktail bar with its five chandeliers and lovely furnishings was a great place to start the evening and we would have eaten there as well had I not looked through to the fine dining room adjacent to it.
Settling in there with a glass of champaign we decided on the 7 course sampler menu with matching wines and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The fresh crab starter went well with an interesting French white wine, the pigeon was perfectly paired with a NZ Pinot noir, the scallops with a surprisingly good Spanish gerwetztraminer which was ideal with the dish. Our beef was cooked as requested and was complemented by a lovely French Grenache and followed by a peach desert and a remarkably good Californian orange muscat.
A smooth port with the cheese selection and a short expresso with a cognac to finish left us feeling that our decision to stay in the hotel and enjoy the best of what it had to offer was indeed a fortunate one.
We had planned to move on to the hotel's jazz bar after dinner but we were so relaxed that bed was really the only option.
I guess it will be an afternoon siesta in readiness for a good Irish Craig and a little bit of jazz tonight!
