Merchant Hotel
Ranked #2 of 45 Hotels in Belfast
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 19, 2012

After cycling 50 miles or so with full panniers etc. we arrived in Belfast ready for a couple of days of revival in the five star Merchant hotel.
We weren't disappointed !
Our art deco suite has some nice features including a nice big tub which is ideal for soaking tired mussels and a very comfortable bed.
The cocktail bar with its five chandeliers and lovely furnishings was a great place to start the evening and we would have eaten there as well had I not looked through to the fine dining room adjacent to it.
Settling in there with a glass of champaign we decided on the 7 course sampler menu with matching wines and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The fresh crab starter went well with an interesting French white wine, the pigeon was perfectly paired with a NZ Pinot noir, the scallops with a surprisingly good Spanish gerwetztraminer which was ideal with the dish. Our beef was cooked as requested and was complemented by a lovely French Grenache and followed by a peach desert and a remarkably good Californian orange muscat.
A smooth port with the cheese selection and a short expresso with a cognac to finish left us feeling that our decision to stay in the hotel and enjoy the best of what it had to offer was indeed a fortunate one.
We had planned to move on to the hotel's jazz bar after dinner but we were so relaxed that bed was really the only option.
I guess it will be an afternoon siesta in readiness for a good Irish Craig and a little bit of jazz tonight!

I love this place, proper 5 star excellence. Beautiful large rooms, fantastic spa, excellent service, polite and attentive staff. Everything is top of the range. Well located to, does get busy at the weekends, but we are here mid week and it is lovely. Price reflects quality, but there are good deals to be had. A real treat.

I cannot give this hotel any greater praise. It is decadence at its best. The architecture, decoration and service is outstanding. I spent one day and evening on business. My room was on the second floor. The room was comfortable and though not over spacious, it had enough room. It was luxury. You have a personal floor attendant who will see to your every whim.
Take a walk down the corridors and take in the art and history.
Take dinner in the great room. Service is impeccable, food is exquisite.
I could go on and on about this hotel but I won't. Please just go and enjoy. It stands way above all the other hotels in the city which really all look the same inside.
No matter what the weather. Please go and sit in the outside hot tub on the roof overlooking the city.

A truly lovely hotel, centrally located in an iconic type building, with staff who are very service orientated and very well trained. The rooms are large, well set out and have the best darkening curtains ever. The restaurant/dining room in the main chamber is stunning, the bar next door a great spot for a nightcap and the whole experience was delightful. Not cheap but great value in my view, would love to go back for a few days.

Room Tip: We had a first floor room, it was quiet and pleasant.

Agree 100% with the other reviews regarding the sumptuous surroundings, efficient and friendly service and overall feel good factor. Not cheap but well worth every penny. The interior of the main restaurant is a breathtaking example of Victorian splendour. Look forward to another stay when in Belfast.
