Tara Lodge
Ranked #1 of 45 Hotels in Belfast
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 14, 2008

Planned a two night trip to Belfast before heading up the Antrim Coast for a few days in a rented cottage. Pricing up hotel options revealed that the Tara Lodge compared very favourably with the usual chain motels (Holiday Inn, Hilton, Jury's Inn, etc).

Arrived around 18h on a Monday evening. The hotel is three minutes walk from Botanic train station (between Belfast Central and City Hospital). This is a much more convenient option if you're arriving at Belfast City George Best Airport. Just ask for the free shuttle bus to take you from the airport terminal to Sydenham train station. If you arrive in Belfast from Dublin on the Enterprise train just hop on any southbound train for the next stop.

The evening and night porter was very friendly and checked us in smoothly. The room was on the first floor facing onto the street, but it's a quiet side street in a busy and mixed area. Sixty seconds walk to the busy Botanic Avenue, where there are loads of decent places to eat and drink. The rooms have all be been renovated in the last year, and are finished to an exceptional standard for this price of hotel, although the sharp modern style of the rooms does clash a bit with the fake panelled doors and naff gold door handles.

The double bed was high and firm, but very comfortable, with fine sheets and a warm selection of colours on the carpet and the walls, where wood panels frame the bed. A digital flatscreen TV was mounted on the wall at the end of the bed, and the bedside lamps were good for reading in bed. However the double bed was formed by two singles pushed together, which meant a slight crevice was noticeable in the middle of the bed, and the bedside tables were a bit of a stretch from the bed. However the bed was massive and very very comfortable. Double layers of glazing allowed for good ventilation without noise from the usually quiet street.

The bathroom was sharply styled and very clean, with a good shower. It certainly passed the litmus test of feeling as though we were the first occupants.

Overall an excellent hotel - definitely the best value four star in Belfast. The proprietors have deliberately chosen to disguise a bed and breakfast as a very smart hotel. There's no need for a bar or evening meal service when Botanic Avenue has such good offerings near by. These include the great Ulster Fry and cheap wholesome family cooking (including a large veggie selection) at Maggie May's cafe, the great fairtrade coffee and cakes at Clements Coffee, and the fantastic No Alibis crime bookstore.

I stayed at Tara Lodge on the 31st Dec 07 and i have to admit its prob one of the best places ive stayed at. Due to being new yrs eve that we were staying here, i only booked this hotel around 6pm that night and was surprised i actually got a room, as other hotels were full booked (hilton, days, travel inn, jurys inn, europa) yea i can admit i left this 2 the last min.

i have to say usually hotel rooms dont look anything like the one they post on there website, but tara lodge pics are exactly wat the rooms are like. i have 2 say they have amazing quality beds they were so comfortable and the room was nice and clean and fresh, and had some sort of a hommie feel 2 it which was nice. the tv channels were also really gd for being a lodge. oh and i forgot 2 say staff were nice and friendly.

well the only thing that i didnt try was the breakfast, but i definately try it next time since the other reviews i have read about it.

I discovered this fantastic hotel a couple of years ago, and stayed here whenever I visited Belfast on business.

The receptionist, Tom, is extremely friendly and helpful. He knows the local area, restaurants and entertainment scene very well indeed, and nothing is too much trouble for him or the other helpful staff.

The rooms are very modern with a sharp decor. Extremely clean, well kitted out. The WiFi is good and cheap enough too.

Its location is very well placed for restaurants, and the bustling Botanical area of Belfast.

Breakfast is fantastic. On the days that I avoided the full Irish, there was a superb selection including Pancakes in lemon, honey and butter.

I can't think of one bad thing about this place. Highly recommended.

This establishment is amazing. The rooms are absolutely gorgeous - bright, modern and very comfortable. The service was fantastic as the staff are all friendly and very helpful. We only stayed one night, and it was hard leaving the next day!!!
I was so pleased as I had booked it over the internet and was a little nervous as its easy for websites to lie, but it was a risk worth taking in this case.
Such good value for money as well as the lodge offers pvernight parking.

We stayed at the Tara Lodge over a weekend. It's location is great - it's a fairly direct 10-15 minute walk into the city centre, and there's plenty of bars, takeaways and mini markets nearby.

The Lodge itself, is clean, quiet and unassuming. The rooms are large, nicely decorated and clean, and the bathrooms are modern and a good size. The property does however suffer from not having a bar to differentiate it from the average b&b and give you somewhere to go besides your bedroom. But then, if you're only staying for one/two nights, you probably won't even notice this. And the DVD player in the room is a great touch.

Breakfast also offered some good options, and was very tasty. The staff are friendly and helpful and were willing to answer any questions I asked.

If you're looking for somewhere central to stay in Belfast which is comfortable and secure but doesn't cost the earth, then the Tara Lodge is a good bet.

We were excited to stay at this place given the great reviews it received. Unfortunately our stay was not all that great. Our room wasn't ready until 3 pm, so we checked in later than we anticipated. The location of the hotel is nice -- we didn't walk to city centre but apparently it is a 10 minute "brisk" walk. The neighborhood it is in, is nice though - plenty of shops and restaurants. The breakfast the next morning is very nice. Our main complaint was with the man working the night shift, who was unnecessarily rude and downright offensive to us. Based solely on his attitude, I would not recommend this place to anyone.
