It was chilly and cold so the Ulster Museum was a great way to spend our first morning in Belfast. I great mix of Northern Irish history and general natural history; I think kids would definitely enjoy it (or a group of 20-somethings like us).

The museum is located in the Botanic Gardens, near the Palm House, which is also worth a visit. There is something for everyone here. Admission is free. There is a nice cafeteria type restaurant, and a great gift shop.

I love natural history museums and spent all day here. But it is much more than a natural history museum; the collections in this building are: art (painting, ceramics, fashion, glass, furniture), archaeology(Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Medieval Ireland), history (coins, medals, photographs, the Troubles), world culture(Asia, Africa, the Americas,Pacific and the Ancient World), animal life, plant life, and rocks, fossils and minerals.
For children, there are Discovery Centers with hands on activities, which are used for school field trips, but are available to visitors when they are empty. There are also hands on activities in many of the exhibits, and a children's map/guide with stickers they can attach when they have found the item.
One of my favorite things was the ultraviolet room in the rocks and minerals gallery. It is a room with a large selection of rocks. When you enter the lights go out and an ultraviolet light comes on and the rocks glow. There's a recording explaining what is happening and why.
Another thing I loved was the contemporary stained glass in the museum. In several galleries there were walls of very colorful stained glass.
Information is presented in a variety of ways: dioramas, artifacts, videos, photographs, hands-on activities.

Ulster museum is fantastic, no better way to spend an afternoon with the family in Belfast. The range of exhibitions on display would apeal to most age groups from dinosaurs and a mummy to the fantastic spanish armada artifacts. They are laid out in a way that seems exciting to children and not boring, as a parent its great to feel like they wont realise they are learning because its all so interesting!

Entry is free and the staff are really friendly, the kids got cool kiddy maps with stickers to apply when they found the artifact, this helped keep them interested and notice lots of other cool things along the way.

Even the gift shop at the museum has some excellent value toys for the children or as gifts to take home, usually these giftshops are best avoided but in this one they truly have something for all budgets.
Our children had great fun for the weekend with some of the pocket money items they bought there. They also had lots of interesting books and mugs and ornaments etc.

The top floor of the museum has a nice area where younger children were drawing pictures and doing art, this also had nice tables and chairs set around with puzzles and books to keep the parents happy while the kids did art! I thought this was a really nice touch and also a great way to take a quick break without having to spend money in a cafe.

We didnt visit the cafe although the garden outside looked like it would make a really nice picnic spot if the day was nice. It really is the ideal place to go for a fun filled family day out which wont cost much.
We will be returning this summer without a doubt.

If you visit - be sure not to miss the mummy who had her face reconstructed and all the egyptian artifacts, truly amazing and fantastic. The only thing to watch out for is the museum doesnt open on mondays so make sure to come another day!

This museum is great in the sense there is something for everyone - art, antiquities, some fashion, nature, dinosaurs etc. it's free which is great, and laid out very modern and cleanly. Unquie atmosphere, and items. Great area at the top where children can make their own art in a daily craft area. Worth a quick visit.
