“Best burgers in town!”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

We love The Barking Dog! It never disappoints. We've tried various dishes but its hard to beat the Burger which is melt in your mouth delicious, the scampi and the crayfish pasta. Staff are always friendly and welcoming. Coffee is excellent too. Give it a go, you will really enjoy the food and the ambience.

“Good dog !”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

Visited Saturday night with friends and had some great food which was served in a nice atmosphere aided by excellent service with no rush to chase us from our table . Duck, fish pie lamb and a shin beef burger on the menu as well as an excellent desert selection. Will visit again .

“Very good (in spite of the name)”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

Seems a popular spot for all ages, couples & families - had wanted to try it for some time, but was put off by the less-than-enticing name - one wonders what other titles were considered, before settling on "The Barking Dog"? The Sick Parrot? The Slaughtered Lamb? The Rabid Fox?

However, once inside, there were no dogs, barking or otherwise, on the menu. It was Easter Sunday afternoon, so presumably that's why the food menu was not particularly comprehensive, unlike the drinks menu.

Unfortunately, the familiar wine that I chose was not available: instead, I was so swiftly presented with a sample of three alternatives to taste, that I suspected they were actually all the same house wine (just my numbed tastebuds, I guess).

Bread appetiser & cheeseboard to finish were both ample for two persons (served on currently trendy well-worn wooden chopping boards). Mains of chicken & beef were served modern Sunday Dinner-style, with roasties, big Yorkshire Pudding & caramelised veg. All very good, although the meats could have been a little warmer.

Staff were friendly & informal, without being too forward or intrusive. Decor was rustic, with black riven floor tiles, distressed wood strip table tops (with gaps between the planks...). The frontage of the building has a railed-off astro-turfed seating area for smokers or diners braving the cold to watch the yobs go by.

Overall, an enjoyable afternoon & not the most expensive in town.

“Loved it!”
Reviewed April 1, 2013 via mobile

Been wanting to try the barking dog for a while and visited on Easter Monday with some friends. From the moment we walked in the service was brilliant, the guy who spoke to us really knew his stuff and was able to talk in detail about the dishes even the veggie one for myself! Also let me have a taster of the ale before I ordered it, which I really appreciated. Can't fault anything! The food was delicious, I had the veggie "lasagne" and my friends had burgers and we couldn't complain! Will definitely visit again :)

“Great little place”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

Had a great dinner here with two friends, staff were the friendliest I've ever met and the food (great pie) and beer were fantastic. Lovely setting and just a short walk into the city!
