The Gower Golf Club

Reviewed November 16, 2012

We went to the Gower Golf Club for a wedding. The wedding itself went very well indeed, the meal was very good, as was the service and the attention given by the staff. We spent two nights in the hotel. The first night the room was stone cold, despite there being a frost in the air there was no heat. This was reported and we were told that it would be fixed. This did not happen until the next evening, when a little heat came from the radiator - but it was still rathert cool in the room. The breakfasts we had were good with extra tea and toast etc. being available. It was a very pleasant stay apart from the cold. We would probably stay there again --- in the summer !!
The view from the hotel car park across the golf course and river estuary was excellent - well worth a look!

We stayed here for a night whilst visiting relatives in the area. We had booked and prepaid and there was initial confusion about this when we arrived as we were asked to pay again. It took 3 members of staff and 20 minutes before we finally had a key! The room itself was part of an annexe and was a decent size and fairly clean (bathroom a little dated with some small mouldy and mildewy bits but not terrible).

We were on the ground floor and could unfortunately hear every step taken in the room above. Luckily we weren't actually in the room for very long but I can imagine it being a nuisance for longer stays.

On the positive side the bed was very comfy with spotless, crisp white linen and fluffy duvet and pillows. There was a kettle and tea coffee, biscuits.

Breakfast was simple and well cooked for the full English although the toast was cold. The continental selection was very limited though - the only fruit was grapefruit and there were 3 cereals and a couple of pots of yoghurt; very disappointing.

Overall this was fine for our purposes but would not recommend for a romantic break or special occasion.

On the plus side, the beds were comfortable with lovely clean cotton linen, plenty of good towels, lots of hot water, pleasant and friendly staff.

The Golf Club's situation is lovely with fantastic views out over the estuary - great sunrises and sunsets. The breakfast bacon was beautiful.

On the negative, it's run down, badly needs a complete refurbishment, and some quality staff training. Cleaning and maintenance standards are not high - our en suite door wouldn't shut, there was a hole in the door where the lock had been removed, it's main light didn't work and no replacement bulb was available - though they did reduce the bill to take account of this when we complained. The evening restaurant was shut so we had to have our meal in a drab and deserted bar.

I realise it's primarily a Golf Club but it could also provide great accommodation with a bit more care and effort.
