“Wonderful Bed & Breakfast Experience”
Reviewed October 3, 2012

As a professional woman who stays in many hotels all over the country I had never stayed in a bed & breakfast before and booked this because the Celtic Manor was full (I was attending the IFP conference). I have to say this was a fantastic first for me. What a lovely experience. Viv & John were very welcoming and I truly felt at home. My room was beautiful with a lovely comfortable bed and the en-suite fantastic. It was quiet too, not like so many hotels! The home cooked breakfast (cooked to order) was great as was all the fresh fruit and a bit pot of tea to boot! I would absolutely recommend this B & B and it was significantly cheaper than the Celtic Manor.

My daughter and son in law have just returned from a night in Cardiff, after seeing Michael McIntyre, and stayed at this hotel and raved about the welcome, the service, the room, the food and overall upkeep of such a lovely hotel. They have recommended to us this hotel for when we visit my brother in Wales. Easy access and easy to find just off the M4. Also have spoken about visiting Wales and booking The Rectory for a break with their children.

On arrival i was greated by the most welcoming couple, offered tea and handed two yummy homemade brownies. The room was ideal, spacious and comfortable with all the little comforts of your own home. The room and the view was stunning and best of all it was so peaceful, i slept great. Breakfast was lovely too!!

We visited the Old Rectory, Viv and John, for 3 nights during our honeymoon trip to Wales. It was more than perfect! A very warm welcome, a superb room, delicious brownies & a marvellous breakfast and most of all, the most friendly people you can imagine. It was a pleasure to stay with them and if you need a place to stay in the South of Wales: this is it.
As we wrote in the visitor book: "if there would be an award even better than the Golden Award, Viv and John would certainly also win it."
The Belgian couple.

This was our second stay at a B&B rather than a 4/5 star hotel, The Old Rectory is a large property set in a high position with panoramic views across Gwent and the River Severn, our hosts Viv and John made us feel very welcome offering afternoon tea and homemade cake on our arrival.
The property is very spacious and decorated to a very high standard which has achieved a five star gold status. Our room was well decorated and exceptionally clean with excellent views across the countryside, we had a free standing bath together with a large shower unit, the bed was very comfortable with Egyptian sheets. Viv and John are very proud owners who make sure every detail is covered in your room with excellent range of toiletries, fluffy robes, face cloth and fresh milk for tea and coffee which is supplied in a small flask.
John was very kind he drove us to our 50th party venue within Newport; he is like the Welsh Tourist Board with a wealth of knowledge of places to visit together with travelling times.
Breakfast the following morning consisted of a range of fruit juices, cereals and fruit; we opted to have the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on a muffin which was excellent.
We had a perfect stay at The Old Rectory , Viv and John are the perfect hosts and treat you more like friends than guests that’s why we will be returning to their lovely home in the near future.

An outstanding B&B! The house is immaculate, beautifully furnished and kept. Viv and John are so caring and friendly that the taxi driver who came to pick us up at the end of our stay thought our relatives were waving us off. I thought the previous reviews might be too good to be true, but I absolutely agree with all they say. It's a lovely, comfortable, welcoming home. Nothing is too much trouble and Viv and John cut no corners in their excellent service. The huge breakfasts are delicious and beautifully presented. The little touches like fresh milk and home made cake in the room make you feel very well looked after. I certainly hope to go back.
