“Monument of a bygone age.”
Reviewed December 21, 2012

Just look at it! Doesn't run all year around, but we'd make a special trip to Newport when the children were younger to go across the river on the transporter bridge!

“The road really moves!”
Reviewed December 4, 2012

This is a piece of engineering from a bygone age, when Wales was the Industrial Centre of Europe, if not the World! Take young children to capture their imagination, before they get jaded by too many electronic games.

You can still drive onto this piece of road, which is transported on enormous cables to the other side of the River Usk. There is nothing much to do at the other side, except come back. It's completely free if you walk on to the bridge.

“Ride back in history”
Reviewed December 4, 2012

This is one of only two remaining working transporter bridges - the history alone is breathtaking.
Well worth a look

Travelling across the Newport Transporter bridge on foot or with your car certainly adds to your holiday. It is one of the oldest and longest in the country

“Worth a look”
Reviewed October 18, 2012

As a feat of engineering, this bridge is definitely worth a look. The guys who run it are friendly and down to earth and for £1 (at time of writing) you can cross by car, free on foot.
If you have young kids, they'll love it.
My only criticism is that it's not managed well - it's not obvious when it's open and the ability to be able to walk over the top is severely restricted to certain times of the year (this used to be open all year round).
The visitor centre is worth ten minutes too.
