Celtic Manor Resort
Ranked #5 of 18 Hotels in Newport
Reviewed July 5, 2013

I'm not really into golf but Celtic Manor Resort delivers as service that could well change my perception of staying at hotels aligned with the greens and fairways of Great Britain .
From the moment I pulled up at the hotel entrance the service was first class from the concierge , reception, waiters , waitresses, room service . The room was spacious and well equipped. The bed ,well the best nights sleep in months . With numerous places to dine again the service was excellent from lunchtime to evening meals. The grounds as expected at such a prestigious venue are a pleasure more so as the sun shone brightly over the Bank Holiday weekend affording the opportunity to dine outside.

Staying at Celtic Manor is not cheap but well worth the expenditure.
Just one negative point I would have expected free car parking for residents and not be subject to the additional charge.

On arrival our car was met by a beaming welcoming smile from an eager to help doorman. He took charge of our luggage and car providing us with labels of proof and proceeded to explain the layout of the hotel. We had not seen the Celtic Manor since soon after it opened decades ago and had forgotten how impressive the enormous foyer is with huge carved Welsh dragons guarding marble pillars.
Our room faced East overlooking trees and enjoying the shelter of a small covered balcony. The room was well appointed and very clean as was the bathroom. The beds were comfortable and we slept well. As in so many large hotels the basin plug did not hold water which is not helpful for a wet-shaver!
We had pre-booked a table for dinner in a restaurant I had assumed was under the same roof (as the website did not clarify the geography of the site) to discover that we needed to be driven to another part of the resort. Dinner in the Rafters restaurant was very good. Friendly and efficient service brought our chosen meals which were well prepared and attractively presented. The wait for transport back to the main hotel was far too long!
Breakfast served in the Olive Tree & Garden Room again was efficiently served. All staff on the resort were helpful and willing – the slightly overblown opulence of the surroundings is well balanced by friendly service.

The hotel with all its Facilities, The food and staff were excellent, Played 2010 and Montgomerie courses, Both the courses were outstanding.
The only criticism we had were the instruction to keep the buggy’s on the roads at all times not allowed on grass. Which we believe added at least an hour and a half to the length of the game for everyone (over six Hours). We were paired up as a four ball with two buggy’s
We arrived at the second tee on the 2010 course to make up the fifth group on this hole, We had to wait for the players in front on every hole,
I played off one tee down the middle of the fairway, Buggy path was to the right of fairway, drove buggy down path until level with ball selected a club walked 40 yards to the ball, Miss hit next shot down the fairway 140 yd’s and 30 yards to the left into a lake,
I then had to walk 40 yds back to buggy, Drive the buggy down the path level with the ball. As I could not see the next shot I had to select several clubs and a ball from my bag, which I then carried 70 yd’s across the fairway to the lake, Dropped and played my ball towards the green then walk 70yds back to buggy before driving down path to green to finish the hole, this is a bit ridiculous. It does not make for good golf, or in any way speed up the game
Everyone on the course with buggy’s would have had the same problem making a four and a half hour round into a six and a half hour round. If everybody had carried or pulled a trolley they would have taken a lot less time to get round and would have had less distance to walk. We had a brilliant two day break at Celtic Manor it was good value for money, and could not have asked for more, We will be returning later in the year to play the 2010 and Roman Road course.
P.S it is advisable to use a buggy on the Montgomerie course as it is rather hilly

Celtic Manor, Ryder Cup great advert for the resort, but a big let down. One night stay for a conference was too much. The room in the Manor House was small, the outside temperature was -5 and there was no heating! After a long wait staff brought down a portable heater...not quite 5 star! No hot water at night and only luke warm in the morning! May be I was unlucky! Don't think i will stay there again

Four of us booked at Celtic Manor for an afternoon tea. On arrival we were shown to a table in a lovely conservatory area looking out to one of the golf courses. We were first of all surprised by how many people were there having tea too! We were presented with a glass of Prossecco and given a wide choice of teas. We each chose our teas and then given a tiered platter of really delicious sandwiches and yummy cakes, some looked too pretty to eat!! A little while in we were also served with warm fruit scones along with strawberry jam and clotted cream. We were actually really, really full after all this and would say we all really enjoyed ourselves. This was such a lovely afternoon and we would definitely go again in the future. My only criticism would be sharing one tea strainer even though 4 vastly different flavoured teas and no cake fork , which I would have thought standard for a 5* hotel but it didn't spoil it a bit!!

Absolutely stunning and utterly breathtaking hotel lobby, almost like something out of vegas!! We had a balcony room over looking the golf course and it was fantastic, room was excellent with an amazing marble bathroom with bath and shower!! huge bed and tv. Excellent spa and pool facilites excellent restaurants. just a shame about all the awful golfers and their terrible clothes!!

Room Tip: i would think most rooms have a good view, very beautiful area.

My husband and I stayed for one night on a ' special deal', cannot fault it for value for money.
We had dinner in the Olive Tree, which although a buffet means you get to try everything. The starters and desserts were amazing, the mains not so impressive but still good.
A comprehensive and not so cheap wine list, with helpful wine waiter.
The room was immaculate and homely.
Breakfast was fabulous, my kids would have loved the pancake machine.
My only gripe was the gym was very stuffy and the staff in the gym not very helpful.
The pool and spa area were great, very luxurious feeling.
Would definitely return.
