Stayed here recently for 2 nights to see Micky Flanagan. Having booked this some time ago i left it late to check reviews and was appalled when i read them, because there were others shows on in Cardiff at the time, very few hotels had places available (unless you paid top whack) so contacted the manager whom assured me that the hotel was fine and that some people had been picky. So my partner and i turned up, i was a bit worried about the hotel as i'd not told my partner what i'd read and knew if the hotel matched the reviews I'd get it in the ear.
Thankfully i have to report our room was spotless (4 poster bed), slight bit of noise from the road but that was more to do with the catch on the window. STAFF were very helpful and attentive, Breakfast FRESH & tasty. will be staying again this is a lovely example of a Victorian House.

We booked on line several weeks ago but on arrival the receptionist had no record of us in her diary. She eventually found a print out of our booking but then struggled to accommodate us and so put us in Rm 1 - a family room on the ground floor. We had to pay CASH upfront for both nights or pay a 4% charge on debit as well as credit card - the website states only credit card surcharge. We were not given a receipt.
The pedestal mat around the Wc was soaking wet. The bathroom smelt of bleach, there was a dirty beaker on the wash basin (dried up red wine). There was no lock or even latch on the bathroom door. There was an odd half sized bath with no taps and an overbath shower which squirted water past the curtains onto the floor unless you were very cautious. The complimentary toiletries were minimal.
The "double" bed was only about 4ft wide, with a cheap and uncomfortable mattress which improved slightly after we placed two folded blankets on it.
We had chosen this hotel specifically because it stated "free parking" but when we returned at night we were locked out of the car park and had to drive around until we found a space on the street. The receptionist told us the next day that she always locked it as early as possible after dark for security reasons. When challenged she said she did not tell us about this because she assumed that we would not want to use our car.
We elected not to pay extra for the breakfast as it finished too early for us as we wanted to relax and get up a little later on our holiday. (9am)
We stayed two nights as we had already paid up. The room was not serviced so we rinsed the cups and made the bed ourselves - not what we would have expected when we were out all day.
We hope that the proprietors will read some of their reviews and improve the situation as a few simple adjustments would have made all the difference.
We will not be staying here again.

Room Tip: Do not have Room One!

We had reserved for two nights but checked out after just one. It was a busy weekend and I think we might have been left with the worst room.

We had seen on the website that the decor was rather dated, but were not prepared for the room we received. It was on the ground floor and was barely big enough for the bed alone. The bed was not even a full size double despite being advertised as such. There were loose wires hanging out of the ceiling, the towel was stained (we only had one towel despite there being two of us). The door rattled in its frame and let in lots of light and sound from the corridor. We spent as little time in the room as we could that evening and checked out first thing in the morning.

The room might have been cheaper than any other option but at £60 a night I would still expect better. And it certainly was no reflection of that on the website. I would suggest paying a little extra and staying somewhere else.

Friendly staff and checked in with no probs.

The room was ok but no flat screen TV or wifi as advertised. The room could do with being freshened up too. No mobile phone reception was a big downer too as I was waiting on calls.

Breakfast was good and towels replenished each day but not the shower gel etc.

There was a 4% charge for the bill by card that wasn't advertised on the site I used as well.

Was a good location for me to be based and reasonably priced but disappointed in not getting what's advertised.

Would probably use again though as very handy.

I would like to say a big thank you for the services that you offered us on our short weekend break in Cardiff right from the begining of booking in until when we checked out.We travelled as group of 8 people to Cardiff for the first time that was after communicating with the propretior, who was very helpful and booked us rooms for a reasonable price for what we got in return i.e rooms, breakfast. On arrival the receptionist was very friendly, showed us round and told us the places of interest in Cardiff. We were served full English breakfast which was hot and tasty. As group we enjoyed our stay at the Penrhys Hotel and look forward to staying there again.I would recommend it to any one planning to stay in Cardiff.
Many thanks
Isaac
