My wife loves Cardiff shopping and we stay overnight 4 or 5 times a year. Booked the Plaza as we had stayed in most of the other Cardiff central hotels and thought we would give this a try. Bit more expensive than the other we have stayed in so I suppose I was expecting a bit more. Overall the stay was okay but on reflection I personally prefer the Marriott or Radisson. When we arrived the receptionist was very pleasant and announced we had been given a complimentary upgrade? I booked through booking.com and selected an executive room at an extra cost. When I got my bill I found that I was still charged the original quoted price. When I queried it I was told we had been given a junior suite? Looked to me the same as the picture of an executive suite so I don't know what extra we gained. Reception too busy on check out to be bothered to get to the bottom of it. Spa was okay.....but just okay.

Breakfast in the morning was quite good with a reasonable selection. The staff were polite and attentive.

The one thing that spoilt it for me was the hotel bar. We had a mid afternoon drink and it was relatively relaxed. Went out for a meal in the evening and looked forward to coming back for a couple of quite nightcaps in the bar. Quiet was definately not what we found. The bar was heaving with young people and nowhere to sit. There was also some sort of sound system going which made it difficult to talk. We soon realised that most of the people were not hotel residents. Not sure if this was a one off or a regular meeting place for people prior to going clubbing. It would have been quieter in Weatherspoons.

Parking overnight was in the NCP opposite. Even with a reduction for hotel guests it cost £18.50.

As I've previously stated I think it would be the Marriott or Radisson next time back in Cardiff unless someone can suggest an alternative.

Room Tip: Ask for one at the back of the hotel as they are much quiter.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback to us your recent experience at the Park Plaza Cardiff. I note your comments to the complimentary upgrade you received on arrival; we have different standards of rooms throughout the hotel which range from our Superior rooms to Executives, Junior Suites and Suites. The room that you were upgraded to was a Junior Suite, these rooms are more spacious than our Executive rooms which was the room type you originally booked.

I am disappointed to read that you found coming back to the hotel after your meal you were unable to find a quiet place to sit in our bar area, we do have our lobby area where our residents can relax with the warmth from our fires and which usually is large enough to accommodate those that prefer a quieter environment. I do hope that you may consider to stay with us again as we would very much like to welcome you back to the Park Plaza in the near future.

I am writing this review in the early hours of the morning as there is no chance of sleep. The noise level from outside is unbearable. Our window has a piece of plywood to the side, which you can put your hand through, so even with secondry glazing there is absolutely No soundproofing. It is in a super location for daytime shopping or taking in a show but the Boom Boom bars and Taxi ranks outside makes it full of kids and drunks. We have been awake since 12 and it is now half Three. The sounds of chanting, you sad *astards is really what you need to make your stay. I have been down to reception but there attitude was polite but still tough! Our reservation was made at least 2 months ago, why have we been put in a room that is obviously not fit for purpose? If it wasn't for the fact that we have had a very pleasant evening at Jamie Oliver restaurant where we shared a bottle of wine, I would drive home now. As it is we will have our paid for breakfast and then drive home to go to bed. I have stayed at the Park Plaza in central London on many occasions and the noise level has been minimum. If you do decide to stay at this Hotel beware of the second floor especially room 220

Recommended by a friend, the Park Plaza in Cardiff lived up to the recommendation and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. The rooms are huge and very attractive, the front staff good, the breakfast excellent and the bar are is fine. Didn't have time to try the pool, spa and gym but nice to have them available. Also in the perfect central location. Only downside is no car park so you need to pay for the public car park opposite - with a 20% discount from the hotel.

Room Tip: If your room is at the front, those on higher floors are quieter - away from the street noise.

We booked the largest suite in the hotel, it is just one large room, with a very drab decoration scheme. There was also a bad industrial smell in the room, not dirty, just not pleasant. The lighting is dim and terrible. But, this is not the worst off it, the walls are paper thin and you can hear the doors next door each time they open and close, and the windows are awful, you can hear the noise off the street and the party or whatever was happening downstairs( and this room is meant to be on the quiet side off the hotel!). The matress was not good, but the bed sheets were nice and crispy. I did not sleep at all and left the hotel the next morning. I would never stay here again! I told the girl upon check out and all she told me was sorry, I think i paid a lot off money not to sleep!

First and foremost may I please express my regret to you for the poor night’s rest you encountered whilst staying with us. As a city centre hotel and Cardiff being a very popular location for tourists and locals we have taken many measures to try to minimize the disruption which these clubs cause our guests. For example, we have installed a third layer of glass to all our front facing bedrooms and are working with Cardiff Council to provide Taxi Marshall's to ensure customers leaving these nightclubs do so quickly and quietly.

I note your comments with reference to an industrial smell in your room during your stay and upon investigation I have found no other rooms or comments from guests of this issue. I will however make sure our housekeeping department is aware of your feedback to ensure if this issue arises in the future we can act immediately.

I really hope that this isolated incident will not deter you from using us in the future. Thank you for taking the time to bring these matters to our attention.

Stayed here on business. Having stayed in Park Plaza hotels in London; pretty standard experience. Rooms are gorgeous, clean, beds comfortable, nice temperature. Would benefit from a more sensible menu - I thought in 2012, we would have moved away from complicated "nouvelle" cuisine, and onto more normal food. The menu in a word is far too stuck-up for its own good! Was so hungry after a very disappointing caesar salad from room service (cold lump of chicken breast) that went out to get "fast" food. Also, drinks are over-priced. This is Cardiff, the hotel owners need to get a grip and stop trying to be posh, and deliver a decent experience for business travellers. In fact the food annoyed me so much, that next time I stay in Cardiff, I won't stay at the Park Plaza on principle.

What an absolutely fantastic hotel! We checked in on a busy Saturday afternoon to be greeted by pleasant, friendly efficient staff. After a speedy check in we found our spacious, comfortable room overlooking what we thought to be a quiet unassuming Cardiff street. We made a short walk into the city centre to have a pre dinner drink and check out the shops before returning to get changed for dinner. Dinner was absolutely fantastic (5 star review of Laguna kitchen and Bar) , followed by a quiet drink in the hotel lobby. We should have guessed by the hotel doormen what the rest of the night had to offer however we were at this point oblivious! We returned to our room to the sight of Cardiff's nightlife in full swing out of our 1st floor window! The once quiet unassuming street had been transformed into one of those fly on the wall accident and emergency documentaries. Queues had formed to enter pop up night clubs and drunks were rolling out of the adjacent pubs and bars. The street had been blocked off to traffic however taxis were swerving drunks and the emergency services were treating beaten and drunk casualties. I am fortunate and can sleep through anything, however my wife laid awake until the clubs had shut only to be woken at 6.00am by Cardiff's street cleaners mopping up the blood and sick from the previous night.
Neither my wife or I can fault the Hotel, it is immaculate, the staff brilliant and the award winning restaurant probably one of the best've ever eaten in. The Only downside was the location. I didn't realise when I booked that the choice between a room overlooking city hall and one that didn't was the difference between sleeping and not!!!!

Room Tip: Choose a city hall facing room.
