Not bad but not great is the best way of describing this cafe.

An upmarket burgervan describes best the feel of the place.

Having said that it is good valud for money and a lot cheaper than the rest of the coffee shops around this area of Cardiff.

I was deluded into thinking that this was a proper food cafe, well it is not.

Warmth and friendly banter are good, but no substitute for home-cooked food and there is not much of that on display. Pea, Potato and Leek soup was quite nice, while the Castan burger was tasty (if greasy) and the chips were bought elsewhere. The soup tasted as if there had been judicious adding to a shop-bought basic, while ALL the cakes were not authentic home-made.

This will serve well for families with small children who want a simple reasonable coat meal, but do NOT go and expect to eat something that you wanted to travel for...

Disappointing really, and the "third place" in the list of Cardiff eateries is a complete nonsense if quality and good food is the criteria.

I was taken here by someone who really enjoys good food and only likes to eat in places that have good reviews, so I was expecting some very delicious food. Set on the outskirts of Bute Park, it is a little confusing to get to but once inside you feel very welcome. HOWEVER, I felt completely let down by the quality of the food.
I ordered the soup and a burger. I was expecting the soup to come first, the same as in a normal restaurant setting, however it arrived at the same time as the burger which overwhelmed me slightly.
Firstly the soup - leek, pea and potato. Quite tasty, evidently home-made served with a white sliced roll which unfortunately was not home-made.
Next the burger - I may be alone in this opinion but if a burger is on a restaurant menu, I expect a home-made burger. This was clearly not, about 1cm in thickness, it looked and tasted evidently prepackaged. It was served with the normal burger additions - bacon, cheese, salad, tomatoes, salsa and chopped peppers. These additions made it marginally tastier. It came with frozen chips and a handful of salad. Overall, this was a very disappointing dish. Although very cheap, I was hoping for much more.
I opted for a dessert, hoping the cafe would redeem itself. The Mississippi Mud Pie was tasty enough. However, it was clearly de-frosted as the cream was rather hard and the pastry was soft and fell apart easily.

Although the people serving are lovely, the food was not and I would not recommend this if you're after quality. If you want decent enough food for a good price, then this is the place to go. However, they are plenty of other much better places locally.

Had a bit of wander in the snow through Pontcanna and stopped of at Cafe Castan. Whilst the menu is not going to set the world alight it's good quality and a perfect place to people watch (a lot of strong knitwear on display!).

Better than you average greasy spoon and a good place to a grab a coffee or snack for a wander in the park.
