“Excellent weekend away...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2013

I note from below that a few people in the past have had an issue with finding the hotel, however on visiting the hotels website they offer very useful information about using sat nav's and on following this found the hotel very easily.

On arrival at the hotel I was amazed with both the grandeur of the hotel and also the fantastic views from the hotel, the view is perfect for a picture postcard!

On checking in I was checked in by a receptionist called Heather, she was extremely polite and professional. On arrival our room was a little cold and we couldn't work out the heating so after a quick telephone call to reception this was sorted within minutes (the hotel has to activate the heating for the rooms in the annex section). Our room was very spacious and we even had a balcony which overlooked the beautiful views of Cardiff.

We were at the hotel for the special reason of attending the Murder Mystery weekend with It's Murder who we have attended a murder weekend with before but in another hotel.

In the evening we all met in the blue lounge which was very cosy with the roaring log fire and the evening began. The entertainment as always from It's Murder was top class and we had a great weekend.

One comment I have to make it on the food at the hotel, the food was absolutely fantastic on the first night I opted for the chicken main followed by a white chocolate mousse in a chocolate cup which was delicious!
On night 2 I opted for the belly pork which just fell apart with your knife and fork and was a delight on the pallet.

All in all a fantastic stay and a real hidden gem, will definitely return!

Dear Reviewer

I am so glad you enjoyed your recent stay at the hotel for the Murder Mystery weekend. As you know it was the first time we have run an event like this for the whole weekend and we are getting some very good comments from it, I do hope you will join us again in the future for a similar event!

I stayed here on business on a beautiful September day, it was a lovely setting in the sun with quiet surroundings. The room was classic design, spacious and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent and the waiter was extremely helpful.

Very elegant and picturesque view of Cardiff from the hotel. Once you find your way to the hotel you will just feel at home.
Will recommend for hideaway treat.
There is free wifi in the rooms and the hotels attendants are very helpful.
The only gripe is that you get given two post codes but it still manages to confuse the satnav.

The folks at New House have had the forethought to provide two different postcodes for those using SatNav to find it. But, whichever you choose, you'll probably end up going round Caerphilly a hundred times or so if you're driving via the Severn Bridge. I should stress that the castle in the middle looks fabulous from all angles (and we certainly saw them all), but we felt like we'd been there since the medieval period ourselves by the time we worked out its insane traffic system. We even ended up in a supermarket car park where my father, not noted for his easy attitude towards inconvenience, nearly went apoplectic.

Anyhoo, we weren't able to spend too much time at the hotel on arrival as we had a rugby league match at the Millennium Stadium to get to. Indeed, New House is an ideal place to stay if you're attending an event there on account that Lisvanne/Thornhill station is only a couple of minutes away.

And here's the rub. As we pulled back out of Cardiff at nightfall, the train rumbled past numerous modernist hotel blocks emblazoned with glowing corporate logos. All of them were just a short walk away from the stadium, but I felt relieved that I was heading back to somewhere with historic charm and individual character rather than being shoehorned into a identikit sleeping pod.

Sure, New House could do with some minor tittivation in places (old buildings always do), but rather that than vapid contemporary "perfection". Moreover, the staff all seemed extremely pleasant and the views are, well, stunning (except during the horizontal rain we experienced in the morning when the outlook could have been onto an industrial estate for all it mattered).

Much as I would like to report upon the level of culinary expertise, I cannot (we had eaten in the city). But that is neither here nor there - if you are seeking somewhere splendid to stay while visiting the Cardiff area, this is it. Honestly.

I have used this hotel 3 times now and it was a great find.
Located on a hill the rooms look out over Cardiff and the bay.
Lovely rooms with big bay windows, comfortably furnished and plenty of space.
Breakfast was the usual hotel warm plates - but OK and the staff were helpful and friendly. No problem to get extra coffee.
Good value - and definitely on my list of places to stay

This was the fifth time I had stayed at the New House Hotel in Cardiff, although the first for nearly 4 years so I was keen to see whether anything had changed.

The Hotel is located on the outskirts of Cardiff, not far from the M4. It has fantastic uninterrupted views overlooking the City but is far enough away to give you the feeling that you are staying in a far more rural location. A great place to relax after a busy day shopping in Cardiff or attending one of the regular sporting events at the Millennium Stadium.

The New House is one of my favourite hotels in the UK. The rooms are absolutely huge, tastefully decorated and immaculate. The staff are very friendly, the food is fresh and the service always good. It really does feel like a local hotel and has the character to match. It is a very relaxing place to be and somewhere I always look to stay when in the Cardiff area.

The only note of caution (and this is not the hotel's fault by any means) is that it can be difficult to find (but then in my view, that's part of the attraction).

Definitely worth a visit....

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have the best views.

We ended our short 10 day trip to Wales with a stay at the New House hotel. It came highly recommended by my cousin who is in the know about Cardiff and Wales. We stayed in room 14 and it had a 4 post bed with a balcony looking down a meadow to the city of Cardiff. It was too bad that it was rainy and foggy for the 2 nights. Service was first rate and very helpful. We had 2 suppers there and the food and presentation was spectacular. They had a decent selection of wines that complimented our dinners.
We will be back and recommend this to everyone.
