“Clean, comfy, a great location, and much nicer than the chains”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2012

So glad we booked Jolyons. We booked the compact rooms and can see why the opinions differ on here! Our room was very compact, but had everything you could need for a short stay. However, there was a lack of surface space and that is why I have only given it a 4. Our friends compact room, on the other hand, was more than adequate in every way and I would have been comfortable to stay in that room for a longer break! Everything else is spot on. We found the staff to be friendly, welcoming and eager to please.

The bar is cosy and nicely presented. It seems to be popular with after work visitors, this may be due to it's location, atmosphere and the reasonable pricing of the drinks!

We will definitely stay here again, but would request one of the more less compact compact rooms!

I stayed at Jolyons, Cathedral Road on a rugby weekend in Cardiff and it was an absolute pleasure. The location for the old part of the city centre is excellent. We were five minutes from the Castle, 10 minutes from the centre, with its under-cover shopping arcades and two minutes from the park.
But the location was secondary to the service. From the minute we arrived the staff were helpful, humorous and couldn't do enough to make our stay a lovely one.
The one downer was the noisiness of the bar later on, but I almost feel that this was our fault because we should have just gone and joined in rather than deciding to go to bed early(ish).
The decor is great, retro french chairs and old sideboards - really gives the hotel the feeling that it is a little bit different. So glad we fell across this gem.

Room Tip: My only experience was a suite, and I would recommend this.

I stayed at the new Jolyons at No 10 Cathedral Road with 11 girlfriends to celebrate my birthday! I can't thank my friends enough for choosing this amazing newly refurbished hotel conveniently situated to the Castle and shopping centre. The staff were so friendly and helpful and made us all feel so welcome. We had 5 of the suites which were spacious and spotlessly clean, all individually charming with fabulous furnishings and fittings! The bathrooms were superbly fitted and the beds so comfortable too. Each suite had tea and coffee facilities, fridge, safe and hairdryer. Breakfast was ok and we could have done with heating in the dining room, which was very cold! The downstairs bar was lively in the evening and offered snacks and coffee during the day. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would love to return again sometime.

Room Tip: Stayed in Drake suite which was on 3rd floor, not a pretty outlook, but the comfort of the rooms mad...

I can't speak to the hotel, but in regards to the restaurant and bar area, the website definitely exaggerates the quality of the experience. As for a "homely log fire" - there was an empty fireplace with a few unlit candles in it and the bartender said that it's never been lit. And as for "home-cooked meal" - our lasagna had little flavour and was accompanied by what was clearly store-bought frozen garlic bread with a disgusting amount of fake margarine spread all over it. They've obviously put more work into advertising the place than making it a unique or authentic experience.

Thank you for your review, I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for the disappointing food you had with us. We have experienced some issues with the kitchen, but we are confident that they are now behind us as we have just appointed a new Head Chef. With kind regards Jolyon’s.

Jolyon's markets itself as a Boutique hotel and seems to think that masquerading under this title will allow it to charge expensive prices for tiny rooms and below average service. Our double room was tiny, barely any room to get around the sides. The vanity area was taken up by tea making facilities so was unusable and it was nowhere near as sophisticated as we expected. The breakfast was pretty disgusting-reheated scrambled eggs, cold tea and a small portion. I would not advise staying here.

I was lucky enough to attend the preview launch of this hotel and was determined to come back with my wife and book a room. We decided in December 2011 to stay in Cardiff to enjoy the festive activites at winter wonderland and the xmas market around St Johns Church. The hotel is ideally situated around a 15min walk from Central train station or 5 mins in a taxi. The hotel is virtually in the city centre and within 5 minutes walk you can be outside the majestic Cardiff Castle or Millenium Stadium. It is in Cathedral road a pleasant wide street which has several pubs and borders the gorgeous park which also houses Glamorgan Cricket Club. The hotel itself has a bar downstairs which is modern and very well furnished. So those looking for a tibble without the chaos of the city centre will be very pleased. There are several hotel room types each individually made. We booked a compact room and found a great offer from a 3rd party internet hotel booking website. The room itself whilst 'compact' was modern and vibrant and had an en suite bathroom which I have included a photo for you all to view. The wife was delighted and commented if only more hotels were to the same standard. There was also an iron, hairdrayer, wall mounted tv, body washes and kettles etc in the hotel room. So to conclude this is the sort of Hotel that Cardiff needs to embrace it is vibrant, modern and the rooms finished to a high standard. The receptionist was very polite and a lad at the bar carried my bags to the room. If you and your partner are looking for a base to explore the city of Cardiff do yourself a favour and book this place !!!!!
