Used to live in Cardiff and visit for special occasions. Unfortunately having now moved out of the area, it's now an annual visit to meet up with family and friends.
The decor is very 80's and could now benefit from a makeover but the staff and food make this the best Cantonese restaurant I've experienced - I regularly eat in London's Chinatown and very few get even close to the Summer Palace.
It's not the cheapest, but in my opinion definitely the best.

The Summer palace has for years had a reputation for being very good. It's become a bit of mantra among some . Sadly, in reality, it's terrible . It's really a case of Emperor's clothes.

The take away over the road ( The Great Wall) produces ano worse ( in fact, marginally better) food with a massively better service ( and, of couse, at a fraction of the cost..... though cost is most defintively not the point of this review)

First the look ( in 2012). One enters through a front door apparently salvaged from some "modern" house in 1970 to then be met by nailed -on beams and an artexed ceiling that would not look out of place in some failed pub in Merthyr in almost any decade since the 1950s. There are fish tanks 'n " Chinese lamps" and )( in stunning cultusal contrast) 1970s wood effect doors with no "no entry" signs on it ( that is, the no entry signs we see on road signs.. a horizontal lignin a red circle) .

The food is equallly ( actually more) dated and depressing. All dishes are absurdly over peppered , and over onioned ,to the extent that they all merge into one.....it's diificult to distinguish one from the other on taste. Large cubes of tofu are routinely plonked in almost every dish. It's bad.

And the welcome isn't brilliant. Neither friendly nor attentive.

And if you go there in the winter it has calor gas heaters to ( try) to help keep one warm.

Cutting edge in 1975 it amy have been In 2012, it's a really depressing, bad, experience As a businees , it surely can't just carry on producing 1970s food in a 1970s environonment with 1970s service levels .
