“Judgement Day treat”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2014

Came to Cardiff for the 2 Rugby matches and booked a special deal with the Holiday Inn, to include accommodation, Dinner and Breakfast. The room was pleasant, but the layout of the bathroom was not ideal, especially if you had some mobility issues. The hotel does have facilities for disabled guests, but if you do not consider yourself fitting into such a category, then you might find getting into / out of the bath a little difficult. Staff in all areas of the hotel were extremely helpful, particularly Loreta, who efficiently sorted out the problem with my wife's main course at dinner.
The cost of parking overnight at the hotel was reasonable. As might be expected the cost of drinks in the hotel bar and during meals is quite high, but given the weather at the time was acceptable, rather than having to going out to a city centre inn.

I am glad that you enjoyed your judgement day treat, and that you found the team so helpful and accommodating.

I do hope we have the pleasure of you staying next time the rugby double header is on in the stadium.

A group of three couples stayed at the hotel in three separate rooms. The rooms were equipped adequately, the beds were large and conversely the bathroom was a little small, with the toilet very close to the door, which made me bump my head when getting up and down.

We all had rooms at the back of the hotel which were quiet. Apparently one of my friends who had stayed on a previous occasion said that the front of the hotel had great views of the castle but was also facing the busy road junction.

The location, opposite the castle, right next to the Millennium Stadium and about 150 yards from the main shopping area is excellent for a city centre break. breakfast was a bit of a farce as it was a 'Bank Holiday' Monday and the full English breakfast was when we arrived at about 9.10 am consisted of baked beans and nothing else. When a lady arrived from the kitchen she had with her, yet more beans!. After waiting I opted for bacon and eggs (as there was no sign of the sausage or black pudding ever arriving). It was however hot and cooked well.

The staff were friendly and fairly helpful. The bar was small and modern and not at pricey!

While all this seems quite negative, it wasn't too bad really .. it just, with a little more care and thought about minor issues (particularly breakfast), it could have been so much better! After all, you're probably choosing the hotel for its location rather than its ambiance, and therefore you can't really go wrong.

Room Tip: For a good view choose a room at the front. For a quiet (traffic-less) nights sleep, choose a room a...

Thank you for your review and I am glad overall you enjoyed your stay.

I have taken note of your points and will ensure we use them in a constructive manner to improve on some of the lapses in our normally high standards that were apparent during your stay.

I do hope you will use us again when visiting Cardiff

This Holiday Inn has a good location in the centre of Swansea, with views of Bute Park if your room is at the front. It is just a few minutes walk from Swansea Central railway station. However, it is on a busy road and rooms at the front suffer from the noise of bus engines.

The staff were always friendly and helpful.

When I opened the door to my room I found a narrow passage with the bathroom and “wardrobe” to one side. At the end of this short passage was a box-like room that felt rather small. To one side of the bed was a dressing table/desk and chair. The TV was fixed to the wall at the foot of the bed. There was no easy chair.

The room was past its prime. There were scuff marks and stains and signs of a repair to the ceiling. The beading along one wall was black with dirt in one area. In the bathroom I found some stained grouting, a surface duct for electric wiring and sealing/caulk detaching in a small area. Beyond the windows there was an external panel that was dirty and had cobwebs.

An old radiator and pipe lined two of the walls, although a more modern heating/cooling system has been installed. The notice by the controls for this system stated that it was controlled centrally according to the season, making no allowance for personal needs. It was blowing cool air and the room was not warm, certainly not as warm as the reception area or lounge. When I complained about this a mobile radiator was provided and that fixed the problem.

There was a minimum charge of £5 for wifi. That might not have been a problem had the 3G signal in my room not been very weak. It was OK for emails but opening Web pages was painfully slow.

The TV offered only a handful of channels, not the full Freeview range.

There were plenty of electric sockets and excellent towels.

In all it was not an unpleasant stay but the standard was not what I have come to expect from Holiday Inn.

Standard double room costing £136 for one night should have had the wow factor but was sadly small and plain. Breakfast was excellent. Fourth floor room had a good view of the Arms Park and Millennium Stadium but thats where the good stuff ends. bathroom was tiny and the extractor didnt work so after a shower you couldnt see anything for the mist. there are better priced hotels in Cardiff but they were full and now I understand why. Wont be rushing back to this one but have learnt my lesson about booking other hotels well in advance.

Room Tip: go high so you get a view of either the castle or the rugby fortress

We chose this Holiday Inn as we were visiting the RHS show at Cardiff Castle and we were not disappointed. Very good room (with great views of the pitch at Cardiff Rugby stadium and of the River Taff as a bonus!) We ate in the restaurant for 2 evenings and had room service for the 3rd; all were very good. If you need a place to stay in Cardiff close to the city this would be a good choice. Staff were very friendly and efficient. Would certainly stay here again.

Great location and a very good hotel.
Comfortable and cozy rooms (yet a bit small) with all the amenities. 10 mins from the railway station.
The castle is right in the front of the hotel. Shops and malls are nearby.
Great breakfast.
