Premier Inn Cardiff North Hotel
Ranked #25 of 74 Hotels in Cardiff
Reviewed July 26, 2013 via mobile

The hotel was very clean and tidy, and staff were fantastic. It seems a strange complaint, but it seemed that all the doors the premises seemed a lot smaller than others in other hotels, which makes getting in and out with luggage very difficult. During my stay of three nights I need five key cards cut, as they simply were not working. Also when I arrived the shower curran stunk of smoke, which means it clearly wasn't changed or their laundry maid smokes. A basic hotel, suitable for a basic stay..

I waited until the last minute and everything in the city centre was booked. Luckily, another trip advisor user had mentioned that the 58 bus takes you to the hotel. It does, but it's a long ride, especially with luggage.

As other reviewers have mentioned, some rooms are not air conditioned. In most cases, this shouldn't matter, and I was lucky to have had the heat wave break the day I arrived. A few days earlier, it would have been pretty unpleasant, though. There was a small fan, and the windows did open. It was cool with the open window, but there was a fair amount of traffic noise.

The room was good size and clean and the staff was nice. If you were driving, the place is probably ideal.

Late on a Sunday afternoon we drove to the Premier Inn on the eastern side of Caerdyff, although it is described as Cardiff North. It is a modern building and, compared to the usual Premier Inn brand, a large hotel.
There is an impressive entrance and reception but round the corner the stairway is bare and functional – it looks institutional. All the corridors and the rooms have Premier purple carpets – an acquired taste in our view. There was something vaguely familiar about the structure and I asked the receptionist how long Premier had been there.
“Seven years,” she said. “And before that it was a Post House.”
Then it all came back to me: the 1970s transatlantic style with a tower that could be seen from the highway from miles away for the new motor age. Needless to say there is plenty of parking. I mentioned the corporate colour.
“Before I came here,” she said, “Purple was my favourite colour!”
The room was fine with large bed, a desk, separate TV table, armchair and built in wardrobe and shelves with the tea/coffee stuff. Purple carpet of course. The en-suite had a shower over the bath plus loo and basin. It was pretty basic but there were good fluffy towels.
We decided to eat in at the hotel to avoid the drive into Caerdyff centre. It was a good call as the restaurant is a handsome space looking out to the cars and trucks whizzing by on the A48. There was only a single waitress on duty as the place was not very full but she worked well. The food was nicely cooked and well presented. Drinks were brought from the bar.
The same spacious restaurant was used for breakfast. There was a very impressive selection on the hot and cold buffet bars.
We had picked up a Premier promotion and for 35 quid we got a comfortable bed in a clean room with a great breakfast.

Only half of the hotel was air conditioned despite advertising otherwise. As a result room was unbearably hot. Provided with a desk fan as air con. Staffing and service was poor. Reception don't answer.

We stayed at the Premier Inn Cardiff North because it was convenient for visiting Cardiff and yet provided excellent value for money. Friendly staff in reception, bar and restaurant. The menu is what you would expect from a Premier Inn but was very well cooked and excellent value. The breakfast compared very favourably with other 4 star hotels that I have stayed in recently but at less than half the price. A really good selection of hot and cold buffet.
The room was as expected and comfortable and clean, an excellent base for getting in and out of Cardiff City or visiting other attractions along the M4

Room Tip: Worth paying the extra for breakfast, super quality and excellent value for money

Just this minute checked into the hotel to find our room is easily the hottest place on the face of the earth, no air con, a tiny fan sitting in the corner to cool the room (as if) and my heavily pregnant partner and I are seriously considering just forgoing the money we pre paid for a 2 night stay and just leaving now as we literally cannot cope with this heat - there are air conditioned rooms here but do not come here as it's not worth the risk of getting the sweltering room we have
