“Fairy tale Rhineland castle built on medieval ruins”
Reviewed March 20, 2013 via mobile

Perched high above the motorway outside Cardiff, this fairytale castle is of the "Mad King Ludwig" school of architecture. Built at the latter part of the 19C by the Earl of Bute (then the richest man in the world, and it certainly shows). One really expects to see Rapunzel and her suitors in this castle in the woods. The staff are all really helpful and friendly, the guide book is good value and a very nice tearoom as well. All combine to make this a super and very reasonable visit. Inside the castle doesn't disappoint, decoratively it is wonderful - don't miss the frieze of monkeys around Lady Bute,'s stunning bedroom or Aesop's fables in the drawing room - really high Victorian wacky medieval!! Marvellous!

“Interesting place”
Reviewed March 12, 2013

We popped in here on the way to Cardiff as I have driven past it hundreds of times through my childhood and later on
It's not expensive
Quite interesting to see inside the "fairy castle"

It was bitterly cold but hey that's wales

I would imagine its a nightmare in summer as very small

“pleasantly surprised..”

well worth a visit and lots to see and explore despite initial impressions about its size. Beautifully restored and interesting features. The surrounding forest is also a nice place to walk and enjoy the countryside

“Compact but interesting”
Reviewed March 11, 2013

This castle is within walking distance of where we live, so we have been many times. Prepare yourself for an uphill climb to get there, but it is worth it. It's a small castle, but has a number of rooms that are presented as they were, complete with furniture, but the decoration is what is the most fascinating and intricate. It's a great little place with lots of nooks and crannies to explore, and they even have a little interactive play area for kids. The entry fee is very reasonable - £3-something.
They also have a little cafe, and if you're just going up there for a walk and don't want to go around the castle, you can get a pass just for the cafe.
