Owner description: The beautiful fabled home of a very wealthy man. While resting on ancient foundations, Castell Coch (Red Castle) is relatively modern, the by-product of a vivid Victorian imagination, assisted by untold wealth. The Middle Ages fascinated the Victorians as much as the Victorians fascinate us today. High Gothic was the order of the day. The ‘eccentric genius’ William Burges was given free rein by his paymaster, John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, the 3rd marquess of Bute, to create a rural retreat to complement the opulence of his main residence, Cardiff Castle. He didn’t hold back. Dazzling ceilings, over-the-top furnishings and furniture were liberally applied.

Of all the castles we visited in Wales, this one is probably the closest to the castles they talk about it fairytales. The ride up the hills, the sweeping road which led to the bridge right beside a tall circular tower... you would expect to see a knight riding out of the entrance or a dragon to perch over the tower in a another moment.

There is an entrance fee should one wants to see the exhibitions inside, which I did not go. I was content to just be outside the castle. It doesn't get any better than this!

Having no car we got to castle coch taking a train from Cardiff and walking across the village and up the hill. To walk up the hill you have to be fit enough, if you're not used to it, it may be very tiring.
Once you get to the castle, you have to pay a 3£ ticket and look at the nice frame of the castle, the rooms and all that, but the whole visit won't take longer than half an hour and, more important fact, it's not the real deal. The castle is just a Victorian-version of a proper 13th century castle rebuilted in 19th century. Very nicely kept, very clean, not to expensive to visit, very relaxing surroundings, but not the real deal.
Anyway i felt that 3£ was fair enough and i didn't feel cheated. Just not expect something authentic.

Small castle on a hill top on the outskirts of cardiff. Is very small for a castle and not much going for it really. Parking is a big issue especially during busy periods as the car park is not big either. It has no real story to tell being built only in the 19th century and is basically a 'copy' of cardiff castle with a few gothic twists. Worth a look but not a briliant attraction of Wales

went with the children to explore Castell Coch, they loved wandering around all the rooms, which have been beautifully restored, so much history in beautiful settings. we took a picnic with us, as there was plenty of seating , great for a family day out!

Situated a short drive from Cardiff and just off the M4 motorway Castell Coch is well worth a visit for the architecture of the castle alone but there's much more. The view down the Taff towards Cardiff and the Bristol Channel is superb on a clear day and the history of how it came in to being is really interesting. Kids will love the layout and there's lots of space for them to run around outside.

A short walk up some steps from the Castle puts you on a really nice walking trail with other stunning views.
