“Very good place to stay in Cardiff”
Reviewed February 12, 2013

The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The position of the hotel is great between the city and the bay area. The breakfast was beautifully cooked and offered an extensive range of choice. The swimming oil was a good size for a hotel and all the facilities very clean. Some interesting architectural features

We'd booked tickets for a concert at the Motorpoint Arena and I thought about going back to stay in nearby hotels we'd been before. However, the wife and I fancied a little more comfort and a chance for a relaxing time before and after the show.

We arrived on a Saturday night around 2:30 (check-in is 2pm) and quickly made our way to our room to get ready for the spa. The room was spacious, well laid out and very well finished. Off to the spa for a soak in the jacuzzi (enough for 6 people at a push), a few lengths in the pool, into the steam room and then the sauna (both just about room for 6 in each). All were in very good condition and none felt crowded at any time.

Back to the room... the queen sized bed was extremely comfortable!! the remote didn't work well on the media centre and we only got use out of the normal TV channels anyway although plenty available to keep you amused (keyboard to help with any online surfing, etc).
Dinner was only being served in the restaurant between 6 - 10pm so we couldn't plan that into our schedule so we ate out locally as the doors for the Arena opened at 6pm (the menu did look nice though). We returned late to the hotel bar and had a cocktail (although they'd run out of a few ingredients leaving the selection a little sparse... and I could have done with some feedback that my cocktail would be "pink"!!).

Corridor noise was a little too evident as you could hear guests comings and goings... slightly disappointed that this wasn't more insulated ! However, the lined curtains work really well !

In the morning we enjoyed a nicely cooked and laid out breakfast (£10 each) and were able to extend our checkout for free as this is apparently available on Sundays... so we asked for checkout at 4pm. However, after another hour or two back in the spa it was time to go around 1pm anyway.

There was plenty of room for cars in the car park which costs £9 overnight. No problem trying to find a space - and I could see my car from the room :)

A very nice hotel, polite and attentive staff, relaxed but professional environment.
You pay a little more, but you get a little more back.

Booked through Booking.com.

Room Tip: If staying until Sunday, ask for a free late checkout...

This is the second time in a couple of years that we’ve (rather extravagantly) stayed overnight in the Novotel when attending an event in our home town. Others might not do so, but we like the hotel’s location at the edge of the old docks basin, part way between Cardiff Centre and The Bay. It’s less than a 10 minute walk from the hotel to the new St David’s 2 Shopping Mall in the centre of town and about 20 minutes to Wales Millennium Centre in the bay. Its location also means that at weekends (especially) you’re not plagued by hoards of drunks screaming and shouting in the roads outside your hotel at 2 or 3 in the morning. On-site parking has now gone up to £9 for 24 hours but there are a few unrestricted spaces on nearby roads if you’re very, very lucky. Check-in and check-out staff were extremely helpful, accommodating and friendly to us.

We forked out for a (discounted rate) executive room and had one overlooking the car park in the old part of the hotel that was probably a docks railway goods warehouse back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rooms on the car park side of the hotel are pretty quiet with triple glazing and they get daytime and afternoon sun (when that happens in Wales). Rooms on the opposite side of the hotel overlook the roads to the front and side. Those to the front get no sun, but those to the side get it for a short while first thing in the morning. It was lucky we had some afternoon sun because the air conditioning based heating was totally inadequate as the temperature didn’t get above 18C, despite being set on full continuously. One big pain with all Accorhotels is management’s idiotic use of “always open” window or wall vents in rooms that, in addition to outside noise, allow freezing wind to howl into the room 24 hours a day. You can’t do much about sounds coming in from outside but if like us you carry a roll of masking tape you can largely stop the wind.

Based on our experience we assume all executive rooms should be particularly spacious with a very comfortable 5 foot bed, an overly hot duvet (in spite of the room being pretty cool), reasonable lighting, and a nice 26 inch LCD TV with a fair, but not exhaustive, no charge selection of UK & foreign TV stations. But note there are only 3 BBC radio stations. Like most large hotel chains, Accor wants to sell guests an entertainment extras package. To be fair to them, at £9.95 for 24 hours wired in room broadband plus films and music, their offering is cheaper than some other chains, but will many leisure guests pay it as an extra we wonder? In executive rooms, the package plus dressing gowns and slippers are included in the price, although if you want it you have to go through the somewhat laborious process of first charging it to the room and then the cost is deducted from the bill. We didn’t bother. The odd shaped desk next to the TV isn’t very practical and looks to be some sort of space saving piece of furniture that was originally designed for use in the much smaller rooms of Ibis hotels or similar. You’ll get a kettle with some tea, coffee and biscuits, an in room safe, plus (for an extra charge) there’s a mini bar if you want to use it. Room cleaning was excellent.

The well-lit bathroom had “typically strange” or quirky Accor all in one plastic sink unit and bath tap controls. We also had a separate glass shower cubicle – we don’t know if the standard rooms have these. The shower water pressure and temperature were good but the shower head could have been better. The toilet was badly positioned too far to the left in a little alcove next to the shower and the cheap nasty toilet paper wanted to ball up into nothing as you tried to use it – why cut corners to this extent we wonder? It was nice to find full size bath sheets rather than the uselessly small bath towels that some 4 star hotels provide, and the towels were not bad quality either. The hairdryer, which hangs under the desk in the bedroom, was much better and more powerful than we’ve had in many other hotels.

We thought the quality of food on the breakfast buffet was particularly good, and the hot items were definitely hot (also unlike many other UK hotels we’ve stayed at). At weekends, if you’re staying more than one night and don’t need to check out, breakfast service doesn’t end until midday, so you could have a very long lie in if you want to. We ate out in the evening so can’t comment about the restaurant for dinner. We don’t tend to use the leisure facilities but they are there if you want them.

If we get a room at the right price, when it’s convenient for us to do so, we’re happy to be extravagant and stay here again, even if the hotel is less than 10 miles from home.

Room Tip: Car Park facing rooms are the sunniest

Although a little out of the city centre I would recommend staying here if you get the current offers at laterooms. Cost us just £60 for the night and included full use of the spa, pool and gym. Even the snow didn't spoil a lovely night away.

A nice, comfortable hotel.

It's about a 10 minute walk to the lower end of the city centre or a few minutes drive (John Lewis car park is probably the closest you'll get). The bar and restaurant staff were friendly and very helpful. Rooms fine - usual generic furniture with very comfortable bed and a small tv. Room was noisy during the day and evening but was quiet through the night. (We had family staying in another room in the older block who heard the service lift all night).

Shower was disappointing as had no pressure whatsoever.

Charge applies for wi-fi and it didn't work in our room at all. They also charge for car parking.

It's worth checking a number of websites for prices as these seem to vary considerably!

Room Tip: Make sure you're not in the old section beside the service lift - even executive rooms are adjac...
