Last stayed here a year ago and it was absolutely excellent - this year, it came close ...

Location, decor, friendly welcome, etc. were exemplary, as always. But as the saying goes, "the devil is in the details", and it's the little details that places like this need to keep on top of to ensure a consistently high standard of customer experience. For example, there were two dead lightbulbs in the room when we checked in - something which should've been dealt with when the room was serviced after the last guests (although, in fairness, I notified reception on our way out for a meal in the evening, and the bulbs were replaced by we got back a couple of hours later).

The glossy surfaces of the contemporary furniture in the rooms look great, but they also show up every bit of dust that settles on them - the layer of dust on the bedside tables really showed up in the sunlight coming through the lovely big windows in our room. I guess I'm just being picky now, though!

The 'welcome pack' states that free wi-fi is available for guests in all public areas and guest rooms - it worked fine in the foyer area, but I couldn't pick up a wireless signal in our room.

Something which I think has changed since our last visit is the idea of charging extra for certain breakfast items - when one is paying £11.50 for a cooked breakfast, it should include a free choice from the whole range of breakfast items. I noticed this time around that a 50p additional charge has been introduced for hash browns and black pudding (and a whole £2 extra for things like eggs royale and smoked salmon). £11.50 is fairly pricey for a cooked breakfast anyway, so piling additional charges on top is a bit rich, in my opinion. I'm not sure that the choice of cheese, meat and fruit on the continental breakfast selection is quite as good as it used to be, either.

All that said, though, these are just very minor niggles - the Royal is still an excellent hotel, and I'd have no hesitation in staying here again.

Room Tip: The higher up the hotel, the quieter it'll be - St. Mary's Street can get quite noisy in the evenings with the abundance of bars, pubs and takeaways near the hotel.

You could not ask for a more convenient location. Staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. The only thing that they need to get a handle on is the reliability of their Wifi service. Even though they moved us to a new room to help - it was still intermittent. However, in the overall scheme it was only a small irritant in what were high quality reasonably priced rooms. I would recommend to anyone.

I dont normally write reviews, but due to the service I recently recieved I feel compelled to inform other potential visitors of my experience.

We stayed at The Royal Hotel and the Customer Service we recieved was appalling. As soon as the receptionist saw us we were told to wait in the lobby for 15 minutes before they would serve us. The Receptionists looked un-interested and we felt un welcomed being from London, however the rooms are nice and well decorated.

We tried to give it another go and booked again, we booked well in advance to our arrival date (2 weeks before) and as it was confirmed online we proceeded to pay for train tickets etc.

The day before we was due to arrive we was told our reservation was cancelled, again terrible customer service as all they said was they had recieved complaints - however we was not told about this when we checked out.

So we are not only out of pocket but also no place to stay.

So be careful when booking with this hotel as they may just cancel last minute with a very vague explaination which could cause considerable inconveinence.

Stayed here last year for a gig in cardiff. Booked online lastminute.com and read lots of reviews about the noise but went for it any way as the price was good and it looked nice. In deed, it is nice! Hard to find the door in initially and you have to go upstairs to find the reception but lovely inside, well decorated, ultra modern, amazingly comfy bed in a decent sized room. Windows too high to see out of though frankly nothing to see. Exterior of building pretty but the noise levels were ridiculous as its next door to a bar so was loud until 3am and the next morning the streets needed cleaning and pavements from the night before. Overall luxury hotel in a sadly unluxurious location.

location great but as mentioned in previous reviews Cardiff parties till 5am so could here noise throughout the night as we were on the third floor. However we expected that as we had gone for a rugby match at the Millenium stadium so knew it would be busy. Excellent service and the food served in the bar in the evening was very good.Easy walk to the very lovely Cardiff Bay worth a visit.
