“Curry Buffet”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 1, 2011

The Salt n Pepper Grill is not what you may expect from the name (and sign)! It is a Pakistani buffet. For around £10 you get to eat as much curry as you can possibly eat. I have always enjoyed the food at Salt n Pepper grill, although I would say it is typically hotter in regards to spice than most places. There is normally a korma on offer for those who are not so adventurous with spice

There is a cooking space in the centre of the restaurant where the chefs cook the extras. The food is kept in bowls in a U shape around the preparation area. You have a selection of extras on the one side of the counter, things like baji, pakora, naan bread etc. The other side has rice and the day's selection of curries.

If you are in the area and you fancy a buffet with your friends then go ahead and give it a try!

“Good experience. Food quality needs improvement. Worth a visit.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 18, 2011

Salt n Pepper Grill opened for business on City Road in 2010 and is starting to make its mark on City Road. Whether the mark they’ve made it a positive one is up for debate, but they certainly made themselves known by being featured on Cardiff’s Groupon, which will allow a lot of people to make up their minds about this establishment. They actually sold out their allocation on Groupon!

I don’t know why Salt n Pepper have included ‘Grill’ on their name as it is an Indian all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant which also offers an a la carte menu.
The place looks clean with some nice decor and friendly service and staff.
During my visit, the group I went with and I opted for the buffet and we certainly left feeling full and satisfied.

The starter and salad options are probably the best offering Salt n Pepper has. The salads are fresh and particularly well prepared, especially the usual chick pea salad and various sauces and dips.

There are many main course options, ranging from veggie options, like saag aloo and paneer curries to traditional chicken and lamb curries. These however lack panache, are of a below average standard and too greasy and oily for my liking. The rice is cooked well and at least they have naan bread on offer, which was lovely. I would like to think the quality of the mains on the menu are of a better standard.

Desserts are somewhat limited and I opted for the Indian speciality of kheer, a South Asian rice pudding.

Salt n Pepper have big competition from their neighbouring all-you-can-eat Indian restaurant Mehfil and they seem to be making an effort to attract customers. As mentioned, their Groupon offering was seemingly a success and their website provides useful information. There are also student discounts to attract Indian food loving studiers like myself.

Restaurants come and go on City Road. Whether Salt n Pepper will survive is up for debate, but they certainly have an intention on making their mark. More effort needs to go into the quality of their food if they want to impress diners who are used to more conventional Indian restaurants. I suppose the demographic they’re aiming at isn’t for the regulars to conventional Indian restaurants, so my overall rating of 4 stars is based on this. If this restaurant was not on City Road and was any more expensive, you would expect a drop of 1 or 2 stars.
