My boyfriend & I made our first trip to Cardiff last weekend (23rd Feb), and he had booked The Angel Hotel as a surprise as part of my birthday weekend. I was unaware where we staying until we were outside the hotel, however the outside is clean and the entrance hall has nice decor.

Location is great, about a 10 minute walk from Cardiff Central Station, a few minutes walk from the castle and main city centre shopping district.
We arrived just before the 2pm check in & were allowed into our room immediately. The hotel staff that served us seemed timid & shy, however he was very helpful & attentive, offering us maps & suggestions on what we could check out on our one-night stay.

The room was modern, a good space for the two of us. The bathroom was the same, very clean and spacious, and the TV worked with no problems. The bed and pillows were so comfortable we didn't really want to get up the next day! We also had a small heater in case it got a bit chilly, which we put to good use. Note there was a hair dryer which worked fine, despite unneccessarily packing my own. The room came with complimentary kettle for tea and coffee, and one negative point however, was that my boyfriend attempted to make us a tea and when he opened the milk it was old & fell out in crumbly bits - perhaps something to check/change on a more frequent basis. Safe to say we had to skip the tea which was a shame, as was dying for a cuppa after we had checked in.

The breakfast buffet was standard - fruit, cereal, a fry up and pastries were offered. No problems and it was tasty. Another point i will make however, is that a lot of the food was not replenished frequently, for example the bacon, brown toast and croissants were not replenished which meant we had to replenish with white toast and missed out on the croissants, which looked good!

Overall would probably stay again as it's a nice little hotel and served well for our short stay in Cardiff.

We have just stayed at The Angel for a weekend break. The plus side is the hotel is very central opposite the castle, the beds were very comfortable & the rooms at the back are on the whole quiet. The breakfast was good on the first morning but on the second morning it was very busy & there were big delays in the food coming out. Most of the staff were quite pleasant, but a couple seemed indifferent to our complaints.
The down side is our two rooms were freezing cold with big drafts coming from the old windows, but we were provided with heaters which helped. Our friends had to stuff toilet paper in the large gaps in their windows. not what you would expect in a 4 star hotel! Also our remote for the tv didn't work.
Overall average but could be so much better with a bit more attention to the guests basic comfort.

.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back quieter

Like the last reviewer we also stayed here overnight on the 23rd Feb as we were in Cardiff to see a show. We however had a great visit. We arrived an hour and a half before the given check-in time and our room was immediately available for us. I had requested a quiet room on booking and did have some concerns when we found we were facing the Castle Clock Tower and the busy main road. We however had no noise disturbance at all and had a really good nights sleep. The Staff are attentive, and the entrance stairway is more than impressive, whilst the room we had was a great size and in good decor.
I have recently stayed in an Express Holiday Inn hotel in Portsmouth for more money a night than we paid for the Angel, and there was no comparison on the service and comfort that the Angel provides. We will definitely use this hotel next time we stay in Cardiff, and will have no hesitation in recommending it to friends.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room when booking

We stayed in the Angel on a rugby weekend in early February 2013. We only booked it on the monday and got a room for the Friday night b&b for a very reasonable rate. The Angel is right in the middle of Cardiff next door to castle its perferct for a mini-break or a short stay. It has its own car park, but it does fill up quickly, there is a municipal across the road next to the Millenium Stadium.

The hotel has recently undergone a facelift with the bar area's and entrance smartened up. The rooms have also been refurbished to a high standard, you now have everything you need for a comfortable stay in a city centre hotel. It doesnt have double glazing so if you are staying ask for a room at the back, no view but you get to sleep.

It is let down by the decor in the corridors as I guess they havent got to that area yet, but lets be honest how much time do you spend in the corridors...

The breakfast is great its a buffett so stuff yourself. We didnt have an eveneing meal as there are so many places to eat (supposedly the best Indian in South Wales just next door) in the city we went out.

All in all a perfect palce to stay for the rugby and shopping.

Paul

stayed at this hotel on saturday 23rd of febuary . arrived early, room not ready until 3 ,which is fair enough. lovely reception area and decor. got in room really nice, nice shower,tv,comfortable bed etc. it was only when we got in things went downhill. room overlooks castle and main road. no double glazing, castle clock chimes every hour and road very busy all night.so loud in room didnt sleep a wink.complained in the morning and just recieved a shrug of the shoulders.to be fair our friends were in room 216 and got no noise.breakfast was lovely ,but on the whole the stay was ruined by lack of any sleep and we were tired all day sunday. dont wanna put people off a nice clean hotel, but if you get room 105 ask for a relocation.

Room Tip: not room 105

A group of 23 of us had Sunday Lunch at the Angel hotel today and it was excellent.

The staff were attentive and the food was excellent.

Nothing was too much trouble - the food was well presented and the choice was really good.

They were even happy to take away the beef that was beautifully pink for another diner who only liked beef well cooked - a nice touch as many restuarants wouldn't even offer to do this.

Well worth the visit.

As I said the staff were all great.

We didn't stay we just had lunch.
