Holiday Inn Express Cardiff Bay
Ranked #17 of 74 Hotels in Cardiff
Reviewed April 5, 2013

This is a standard layout - newish HIE - so from the moment you arrive, you know what you are going to get.

Service at reception was fine - profession and quite fast and soon I was in my standard layout room (I like consistancy). Delighted to be looking out over the docks - nice view, just a bit cold to go walking out there.

As usual, I slepted well in the bed, but was awoken by a fire alarm at 8am - I suspect it was a sneaky smoker in this all non-smoking premises.

Breakfast is the usual, slightly chaotic affair, but I can live with this - it was Easter, so plenty of children in the hotel and because of the alarm, I suspect a lot of people came to breakfast at the same time.

What was nice is that there is space in this HIE for breakfast - sometimes the number of tables to guests is very lacking.

I do like HIE breakfasts - not the widest choice, but everything I need is there and the quality is fine.

If you want to be in the centre of Cardiff - this is not the best choice, but it is a short walk or Taxi to the centre and nice and quiet in the evening.

Nice stay and I will stay again when I need a 1 night stop in Cardiff - if I stay longer, then I go to the city centre.

Dear Hawkwind 1966

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us.

I am aware that the fire alarm was sounded during your stay - which was caused by a guest using a hairdryer when there was lots of steam from the shower in their room. This in turn meant that the majority of guests chose to have breakfast before heading back to their rooms after the fire evacuation had taken place. I am pleased to read that regardless of this you enjoyed your breakfast.

We do advise our guests that to walk to the city centre takes approximately 20 minutes and likewise to cardiff bay would be 10 minutes from the hotel. We can of course organise taxis for those who would prefer.

I am glad to read that you enjoyed the view of the East Dock and perhaps on your next visit it will hopefully be warmer outside so that you can enjoy a bit more!

Kind Regards

I've stayed here twice within the past 2 wks and it's perfect for a stay due to business.

I'm not using the word budget to be negative as its a very GOOD budget hotel and a sign outside also describes it as such.

Good, clean and comfortable and the staff are superb - nothing is too much trouble.

Within walking distance of both Cardiff Bay and the city centre it is ideal and on the waterfront facing the Wharf.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the Wharf - waterfront.

Location good - half way between city and Cardiff Bay - £5 taxi or 15 mins walk..

Service excellent - really attentive and helpful.

Good breakfast - big selection - better than other HI Expresses.

Bar good- and good selection of food delivery options - Hotel supply plates and cuttlery - and will warm food up in microwave.

Rooms a little tired - could do with a bit of a makeover - but clean and functional (Bathrooms very clean and newer looking than rooms- But shower cold both days).

Only negatives - expensive wifi - and parking!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the dock - quieter

Dear No1 Welsh Family

Thank you for taking the time to write a review following your recent stay here at the Holiday Inn Express Cardiff Bay.

I appreciate your kind comments with regards to the service which you experienced and options at breakfast.

Although we currently charge for wi-fi, you may already be aware that as from 1st July 2013, as part of the IHG Rewards scheme all members with Gold and Platinum elite status will be entitled to free standard wi-fi at the hotel - and still collect points for their stay.

We started charging for our car park a few years ago after installing CCTV Cameras, a barrier system and additional patrols of our car park and lighting to help safeguard our customer's vehicles - which of course does have a cost attached, but we do feel that our customers appreciate that their cars are more secure.

We are currently planning a refurbishment of the hotel over the next few months, which will include our public areas, sofa beds and beds.

I do hope that we will have the opportunity of welcoming you back to the hotel again the next time you are planning a visit to Cardiff.

Kind Regards

Not a bad hotel all in all. Very good location if you have a car as very close to all the things to do in Cardiff such as St David's, Mermaid Quay, Millennium centre etc.
Breakfast wasn't bad as included in the price, a few hot items, tea, coffee, cereal, a lot of choice really.
A few bad points: The pillows were very flat and we only had 1 each, there wasn't any 'backup' pillows, although I'm sure these could have been arranged if I had asked.
The fire alarm went off at 1am for a long period of time and then wen't off again. Not the hotel's fault as a drunk party had set it off but no communication form the hotel as regards to safety.
Good points
Very good price for Cardiff
A very nice man on the front desk was prompy and friendly and was a credit to Holiday inn.
Parking was £5 a day - but this is cheaper than other areas in cardiff.

Dear Natztastic

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay of our Hotel. We do appreciate all feedback received, as this enables us to continually focus on our customer service.

I was sorry to read that you did not find our pillows comfortable. Our reception and housekeeping teams are more than happy to supply additional pillows - and a choice of either soft or firm if required.

I understand that the fire alarm was activated during you stay - which can be disorientating for anyone whilst in an unfamiliar environment. I have noted your comments with regards to communication from the staff here at the hotel and will make sure that re-iterated during our training.

On a positive note, thank you for your comments with regards to the member of staff which you encountered at reception - I will make sure that your thoughts are shared with them.

Thank you once again for taking the time to let us know your thoughts and we look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel the next time you are planning a visit to Cardiff.

Nicely situated alongside the Atlantic warf, we were pleasently surprised by the standard of this hotel. It clearly appeals more to the business person, but situated only 15 mins form town or from Cardiff bays restaurants etc, it is good as a reasonably priced holday base also. The staff could not be more helpful. A couple of things stopped me giving this 5 stars:
1. Our room 119 had poor seals on the windows so there was more noise than perhaps there should have been from the outside.
2. brakfast appears to be on a first come first serverd basis. A help yourself affair with plenty of variety initially but was not topped up as it was used, so by the time we got down to breakfast all that was left of the hot stuff was, sausage, scrambled egg, beans and toast, and all these were pretty awful really. But that was it really, otherwise good place and we would go back. Another thing in it's favour is the pub next door 'The Warf' Excellent food and beer.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the warf side, at night the lights on the water are lovely.

Dear Kongogasho

Many thanks for taking the time to review your recent stay here at the Holiday Inn Express Cardiff Bay.

I do appreciate your feedback with regards to the windows. You will be pleased to read that we are in the process of finalising a programme of works which will include window replacement, which means that the issue you have described will be resolved.

With regards to breakfast, in August 2011 Holiday Inn Express enhanced their FREE continetal breakfast with selected hot favourites, including Scrambled Egg, Sausage and Baked Beans. Many of our customers do feel that alongside the cereals, pastries, yoghurts and fresh fruit that it really does give them value for money.

I am really pleased to read that you will be back, and very much look forward to seeing you soon.

This is my third time of staying at this hotel, which must be some form of recommendation. It is very typical of the Hoilday Inn Express brand. Very good value for money, especially with breakfast included. Generally, they are no frills, but certainly a step up from Travelodge and a little better than Premier Inn. It is in a good location, midway between the City centre and the Sennedd/Quayside area, which are within walking distance.

Rooms are standard for the Express brand. The heating in my room was difficult to operate - cold on arrival, but then too hot in the middle of the night having played around with the settings before going to bed. It has a bar next to reception, but with very limited choice - adequate for a night cap.

I would use the hotel again, but as a base for getting out and about, and not for spending too much time in.

Dear MDS24

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us.

I'm sorry that you had an issue with the heating in your room on arrival. I have asked our Housekeepers to ensure that the heating in switched on prior to Guest's arrival, to avoid similar issues in the future - especially given the terribly cold weather which we have all been experiencing.

On a positive note, it's pleasing to read that our location is ideal for you - and we very much look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel for a 4th visit sometime soon!

We stayed in the Holiday Inn Express for 2 nights - both nights we had places to go in city centre Cardiff and walked it in under 20 mins via the Canal/Herbert Stree under the Brains railway bridge to the Hayes. Hotel is typical of the brand - bigger than average room with double (too soft for us) and sofa bed, coffee/tea/ TV with tidy and clean en-suite and what you expect for the price. Reasonable breakfast choices included in the price... Sunday morning was busy but Monday very quiet and we were able to get a table overlooking Atlantic Wharf which is scenic even on a grey Cardiff morning. If you don't want to walk to the Bay you can drive - only 5 mins away. From the city centre the taxi on Sunday night was a fiver. Good value.
