Owner description: Welcome to Bute Park & Arboretum, an extensive area of mature parkland that forms the 'green heart' of Cardiff. The site is managed by Cardiff Council and recently benefitted from a major £5.6M restoration project, supported by a £3.1M grant award from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which restored important historic features, provided new facilities and helped tell the park's fascinating story. At 56 hectares (equivalent to 75 football pitches), Bute Park is one of the largest urban parks in Wales and comprises a broad mix of historic landscape, urban woodland, sports pitches, arboretum, horticultural features and river corridor. Bute Park offers something for everyone including the Bute Park Education Centre, 3 wonderful cafes, toilet facilities, a woodland balance trail, sculpture trail, fitness trail and a varied events programme. Easily accessible from the centre of Cardiff, Bute Park is listed along with Cardiff Castle as a Grade 1 historic designed landscape and contains the fascinating site of a former Blackfriars Friary which is a scheduled ancient monument. The magnificent Arboretum contains 41 Champion trees, the tallest or widest of their species in the UK or Ireland, which is more than any other public park in the UK. Along with the rest of the rare tree collection, the stunning Herbaceous Border, and the range of wildlife present, Bute Park and Arboretum is worth a visit all year round.

“Take the water taxi”
Reviewed February 22, 2013

Definitely take a stroll in this beautiful park. The river, flowering trees, gardens, massive oaks, and public art provide a serene retreat from city life. Consider taking the water taxi down the river to the bay to see a bit more of the city.

“Green jewel in the heart of the City”
Reviewed February 22, 2013

An oasis of calm and beauty in the heart of the City with so much to offer.
Take a quick stroll around the edge of the Castle and the Mill Leat or through the ruins of the Blackfriars Friary.
Dawdle up the river past the Herbaceous border and on to the arboretum.
With more time to spend you can enjoy a longer walk alongside the Dock feeder and into Coopers Field or catch the river bus to the Bay from the landing stage.
And to cap it all, enjoy 'tea and stickies' in the Secret Garden cafe or the Summer House - both with their own distinct character.

“Stunning Park”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

Minutes from Cardiff City centre this is a quiet haven away from the hustle. On the banks of the Taff, it is a wonderful place to chill, relax and have a good walk and explore. Love it!

“Lovely walk and really quiet place in Cardiff”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

If you are in Cardiff and have an hour to spend take a walk in Bute park, there is a tea room near the bridge, an old canal which you can fish, the river Taff and its water taxi to the bay. But most of all you can wid down from the city, shopping or the museum. And it's free.
