Owner description: Welcome to Bute Park & Arboretum, an extensive area of mature parkland that forms the 'green heart' of Cardiff. The site is managed by Cardiff Council and recently benefitted from a major £5.6M restoration project, supported by a £3.1M grant award from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which restored important historic features, provided new facilities and helped tell the park's fascinating story. At 56 hectares (equivalent to 75 football pitches), Bute Park is one of the largest urban parks in Wales and comprises a broad mix of historic landscape, urban woodland, sports pitches, arboretum, horticultural features and river corridor. Bute Park offers something for everyone including the Bute Park Education Centre, 3 wonderful cafes, toilet facilities, a woodland balance trail, sculpture trail, fitness trail and a varied events programme. Easily accessible from the centre of Cardiff, Bute Park is listed along with Cardiff Castle as a Grade 1 historic designed landscape and contains the fascinating site of a former Blackfriars Friary which is a scheduled ancient monument. The magnificent Arboretum contains 41 Champion trees, the tallest or widest of their species in the UK or Ireland, which is more than any other public park in the UK. Along with the rest of the rare tree collection, the stunning Herbaceous Border, and the range of wildlife present, Bute Park and Arboretum is worth a visit all year round.

Living in Cardiff on a working holiday visa, walking through this park to get to work is amazing. The extensive collection of flowers that line the path for quite a distance and fallen trees that have been carved with plenty of skill. There are also a couple places to sit and have a nice cup of tea, which is always nice. Not to mention you can stroll alongside Cardiff castle as well, which is a sight in itself! My wife and I will certainly miss this little part of Cardiff.

Right in the heart of the city of Cardiff, Bute Park surrounds the Castle and spreads along the river for miles. It is so big it rarely feels crowded, and if it does, just go for a wander and find your own quiet space, theres plenty of it! It boasts several cafe's dotted about, miles of cycle paths (you can even hire a bike) enough space for a game of footie, and even an education centre and gift shop! Theres even a water-taxi stop in the park and a small caravan site across the river! Plus it stages regular events such as the RHS Spring Flower Show, Fireworks shows and plenty of other events in a large area, but this still leaves plenty of quiet space, honest! Its been planted so that there is interest all year round, from seasonal flower beds to acres of stunning autumn leaf colour. So go find some wild-strawberrys to nibble on, grab a conker or just grab your bike! Just come and take a peek. So take some time out from site-seeing or shopping and recreate with nature, even for just half an hour! You really wont be sorry!

What a beautiful park! A great place to come for maybe just an hour, but well worth it. For a sunny afternoon, this par is great. (It can get quite busy on weekends though).
