The St. David's Hotel
Ranked #15 of 74 Hotels in Cardiff
Reviewed August 19, 2013

St David's Hotel was clean and modern with nice rooms but somewhat lacking in atmosphere. The room was spacious and nicely decorated, the bathroom was good quality, and we'd chosen a sea view which was nice.

We got a spa package in addition to our room which included two treatments which were relaxing. The swimming pool and various jacuzzi's were lovely and the views from the pool were beautiful. There were nice sun loungers by the pool which added to the experience - and robes were provided in our room which meant we could get the lift directly down to the spa which was a nice touch.

The restaurant had a lot more ambience than the rest of the hotel - it was candlelit and the staff were really friendly. The food was nice but not amazing - I had fish with a hollandaise sauce which was the consistency of butter so not quite what I expected. The hotel is close to a good selection of waterfront cafes/restaurants but around 2 miles from the centre of town so we realised we'd need a taxi to go into the centre.

The reception desk were very friendly, and when we asked if a late checkout was possible (at check in) they were very happy to accommodate us and arranged it for 1pm. It was therefore very frustrating the next day when we were in the lift about 11.35am to see a porter with a list of rooms, of which ours was one. I said "Oh we're on your list" and he said "and you'll be leaving us soon?". Clearly he was making door to door trips to manage people who had missed checkout. He was perfectly courteous and when I explained we had a late checkout he made a note of it. However, the whole experience of feeling that we were about to be reprimanded for missing checkout, having already arranged a late one the day left us with a really uncomfortable feeling. Overall, we'd choose an alternative Cardiff hotel for a romantic break but I'd be happy to stay at St David's for a work trip.

Thank you for your review and I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and in particularly your time spent within the Marine Spa.

I have noted your comments and observations and these will be discussed with my team.

My apologies for the error made by the front of house team regarding your late check-out.

I very much hope we have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future.

Kind regards.

Stayed here for a 2 night honey moon break ( couldn't go far as I have a 2 year old). Location was ideal - lovely atmosphere in the restaurant at night. We had wine, fruit, lovely chocolate truffles sent to our rooms. We were in the master suite and the views were lovely. Would definately recommend but can be quite expensive. We were very lucky to get a good deal. Also Molton brown toiletries!

Having got married here we are perhaps biased as any trip here brings back fond memories! But the hotel is a great place to stay, beautiful suites and excellent customer service. The food is excellent with a very good wine list and the restaurant has lovely views across Cardiff Bay. Definitely at its best in the summer when the sun sets over the water. It is in a fab location with close proximity to the Millennium Centre and town. Definitely worth splashing out on!

we got a great deal on this hotel. When i booked i sent the hotel a email to ask if we could request a room with a balcony as it was a treat for my partners 70th birthday. when we arrived not only did we have a great room with a balcony we also had a bottle of wine left for us. Very nice of them. The hotel was very clean. the staff were very friendly and nothing was to much trouble. Night porter was very helpful. The location was great just a short walk from the Bay with great restaurants and Bars. As for the view stunning u could quite easily be abroad just lovely. We where lucky enough to have great sun sets and sunrises with the views. We took a drive to Barry island not far away and a lovely beach. The location is ideal for visiting the great beaches and stunning country side that wales provides and all on the door step of this hotel all in all I really recomend this hotel and we are booking again for next year.Thank you everyone at St Davids Hotel for a great stay. See you soon.

Room Tip: We stayed on the 6th floor and the view was great.

Stayed during the heat wave cardiff seemed to be experiencing. It was as good as being abroad. We were lucky enough to get a lounger on the terrace, and read our books, perfect and relaxing.

Location is perfect for exploring the bay and the fabulous Wales millennium centre, this is a fabulous building from the outside if you are interested in that sort of thing.

We were lucky enough to bump in to the rooms manager up on the floors who made polite conversation with us. Her knowledge on the gower and beaches to visit is better than any lonely planet book! We had a fabulous stroll on the beach.a perfect romantic escape if your prepared to travel a further 45minutes west.

Swan neck fountains in spa are a must.cocktails in the bar are delicious.

We will definately return in the future. From our experience the detailed and personalised service we recieved is what its all about and this hotel definately delivers.please pass our thanks to helen for taking the time to make our break extra special, we hope to be as lucky next time and find another beach to explore! Please also pass our thanks to the bar team for our lovely drinks.and the spa team for the fluffy towels. Hope to see you soon.

We booked this hotel for afternoon tea. Its in an ideal location with panoramic views of the boats on the river and Cardiff Bay area as you enjoy a delicious tea. If the weather permits you can sit outside on the decked balcony and get some "sea" air while you eat. The staff are very friendly and polite and nothing was too much trouble. The main drawback is the expensive charge for using the car park, so unless you've booked a stay at the hotel use the public car park a short walk away.

Our 3rd visit here on 6.8.13.....why has it taken sooo long to return,3yrs, time flies!!
As previously stated Hotel is lovely, location stunning, spa a real treat!! Breakfast was inc in price which was very nice!!
I'll admit I don't think it is Everyone's cup of tea!! The atmosphere has a strange edge to it!!
I met with a friend who lives locally who said that the Hotel has a reputation for thinking it is even better than 5 star......now that is simply outrageously silly!!!
The service is quite dior!! Eg the 2 breakfasts we had not once were the dirty dishes taken away from the table, we had to put them on a table that needed clearing and there were lots of those. Eg not once were we asked if we wanted any more tea or coffee or toast.
Eg at check out. perhaps one of the busiest times on reception there was only1 member of staff on. There are other egs but I like the place, I have a soft spot for it, so I choose to ignore the hiccups!! We'll be back, hopefully sooner next time??!!

Room Tip: Do you want to look into the bay or out of the bay......both are good views!!
