The Big Sleep Hotel Cardiff by Compass Hospitality

I stayed at this hotel for one night as a surprise from my wife. We are actually both local but decided to treat ourselves to a night out in Cardiff , and then look forward to a stay in a hotel. Sadly I cannot recemmend this hotel and I hope overseas visitors or indeed anyone from the UK/Ireland do not stay here. The location is central only around a 10 minute walk from the main bus/train station. Upon arrival it was like fort knox you press a buzzer intercom and then proceed to the entrance. This resembles a tower block in an inner city with no reception greeting you. I managed to reach the 2nd floor and reception. The lad who greeted me didnt look interested in his job unfortunately and this left a bad impression. The worst however was yet to come. The room was a cross from a set from Clockwork Orange and a hospital. Dirty windows which had no way of even opening. The bathroom was basic and the decor terrible. Please do not stay in this hotel you will be disappointed.

I had been curious about the Big Sleep for many years because of the name and the fact that it's part-owned by John Malkovich. Turns out those are its best qualities. Only stay here if all you need is a bed (not a soft one) and you don't intend to spend any time in the room. It's not a comfortable place to stay.

I stayed there for one night while attending a wedding in Cardiff. Thought it would be better than a budget chain, but in fact it was worse. It doesn't even pretend to be nice. The rooms are embarrassingly awful. Hairy synthetic carpet, old-fashioned bathroom, very very hard bed. The curtains are made out of fleece. There is one iron and ironing board per floor and you have to go out to get it. Both were grotty and I was worried about damaging my wedding outfit but it was ok. The shower, taps and toilet flush kept stopping. So I had a face full of soap and the shower cut out. There were no hand towels and no hairdryer. We were too late for breakfast but it looked like a cereal and toast only affair - no hot food. The decor is garish and awful - the corridors are painted baby pink and the rooms are painted baby blue.

The room had a great view over Cardiff (we were on the tenth floor) and the staff were friendly and helpful. They did manage to get our room ready for us to check in early (we had struggled to find somewhere that would let us check in before the wedding) so that was good. There are pictures of John Malkovich everywhere (even in the room, looking right at the bed). I wonder why he continues to put his name to the place.

Room Tip: Don't stay here if you have any intention of spending time in the room other than sleeping.

Visited this hotel knowing that it would be something a little different:
Parked in the hotel car park at a cost of £6, which is about right for central Cardiff parking costs. Be warned that this is a small car park and you may be advised to park at an associated car park, if it is full.

Had booked the Penthouse Suite online and check in was pain free. The normal check out time is 10:30am, but this could be extended to 12:00 noon for a supplemental charge of £10.00. The reception area is clean and modern, with bar area round the corner.

The Penthouse Suite is on the 10th (top floor of the hotel), which realistically necessitated the use of the lift. This is an aging lift which makes some interesting sounds on its way up and down the building (not for the faint hearted!).

On walking through the door into the room you are confronted by two whole walls of windows; allowing for fantastic views over the south east of Cardiff. It was very interesting watching the skyline change as daylight was replaced by darkness. There wasn’t too much of a worry about being looked in on. However, there were, what can only be described as carpet curtains, that could be drawn closed. This allowed for a feeling of being inside a big teddy bear!

The room itself had a very modern/brutalist feel to it, owing to its previous use as an office block and the chosen decor. This is not necessarily a bad thing and down to a matter of personal taste. I personally found it exciting and different.

The bed itself was very sizable and could have slept a small family in it! It was very comfy and a good night’s sleep was had!

Tea and coffee making facilities were available in the room, as well as chilled water in the lift lobby (although the tap water in the en suite bathroom is safe to drink apparently).

The bathroom in the Penthouse Suite was complete with a Jacuzzi bath which was great once we finally managed to get it to fill up. There are obviously some unresolved issues with the water pumping to the top floor in the building. The water would intermittently go from flowing at a good pace, to just a drip. Which was something to watch out for when having a shower; as when the water came back, the hot would come back before the cold. This allowed for the possibility of scalding hot water spraying out of the shower head!

Irons, Ironing Boards and Hair Dryers are supposedly available on every floor. However, I could not find a Hair dryer on floors 10, 9, 8, 7, and 6 (Gave up by the time I got down to the 6th floor).

Be warned that it is near a railway line as well but the noise of the trains didn’t seem to bother us at all.

All in all it was a fantastic experience to stay at this Hotel in the Penthouse Suite. Any bad comment made is minor and only small niggles. The view from the top floor is fantastic and we had a good time.

Booked last minute, so didn't pay full price, thank god! my husband's initial reaction on entering the room was - lets go home! the room was quite spacious and clean, but fake fur curtains were grubby, remote control didn't work the tv, pillows were so flat they were'nt worth having,no air conditioning, just a fan on the wall, windows don't open, no wardrobe just a hanging rail, and the carpet was office type - horrid. Bathroom was clean, but I found it amazing that the bathroom had a clear window overlooking other apartments - talk about a room with a view! no parking spaces available, had to park in ncp car park down the road. street entrance foyer very dirty and smelly, only one lift working, decor all looks sad and cheap. breakfast was buffet style, nothing hot, and the pastries were cut in half! plenty of toast and cereals though. The only plus for this hotel is the location, easy walking access for everything. If youu're looking for central location and it's only for one night and you don't mind sharing your toileting habits with neighbours, it's ok, but was very dissapointed with standards of this hotel and definately won't be returning. Felt like I was sleeping in an office block :(( this hotel makes Travel Inn look like the Ritz!

Room Tip: don't bother

Check in staff not particularly friendly. Rooms dirty with no fresh air as you cannot open windows. We have to pay £120 because take that were playing that night which was a disgrace for the facilities provided!!!!

We had 2 triple rooms booked, one of which was basic but absolutly fine. The other room was right next door to a train line which disturbed the rest of our party at 8.15am. There wasn't a kettle in either of the rooms, no remote control for the TVs and a broken chair in one of the rooms and no bin in one of the rooms.
We did enjoy our stay but the attention to detail was lacking slightly.
All of the staff were very helpful and the location (apart from the train) was excellent.
