Although it was raining we decided to visit the Castle anyway as there were opportunities to shelter from the rain. The old Roman walls have been restored to show how it would originally looked. The wartime shelters are a chilly reminder of what civilians had to endure during WW2. The Norman Keep has very steep steps but the views from it are well worth the effort - we shall return when the weather is better to appreciate them more fully! The house is absolutely astounding inside and an absolute must to visit. Nice tea room and the adjacent shop is not overdone. Very good value indeed. Extremely pleasant and helpful staff. The Firing Line museum in the basement is very interesting too. Great for kids as well as adults. There were several groups of small school children who were having a great time in spite of the rain.
