very informative, takes a few hours to get round, shame we were not told about having our tickets processed so we could use them again

Make sure you pay the extra for a guided tour; we had a lovely guide and saw rooms that are not otherwise viewable

We've seen our share of castles in Europe, but Cardiff Castle had so much to offer, sans Royalty, that we recommend it highly.

Our review is split into 3 sections since there was so much to see -- the falcony and outdoor areas, the ancient fort and WW II bomb shelter, and the highly ornate mansion/caste created by William Burges between 1869 and 1881. Anyone who found this ho-hum just didn't have their eyes open!

The premium tour is well worth it at $14 GBP for an adult, $12 GBP for a senior and 10.5 for a child as it includes a guided tour of the over-the-top private rooms in the mansion and many tidbits and secrets.

The Private Mansion - what an incredible sense of color, opulence and detail in the mansion area of the castle. The Arab Room with it's high gilded ceiling covered with marble and lapiz lazuli was just the start. There are actually winter and summer Smoking Rooms that are part of the Marquess' "bachelor suites" along with a garish monster to supposedly frighten the women guests away. In addition, the rooftop garden and pool is incredible with great views, and the dining room holds a secret mechanism that brings wine, grapevines that allowed you to choose your own grapes flowers, etc. up from a lower level directly to table to delight their dinner guests.

The nursery was surely designed for some children with a silver spoon secure in their mouths - surrounded by wall to wall paintings of fairy tales, miniature furniture and toys galore. The master bath in all it's mahogany glory, looked quite relaxing.

You'll catch glimpses of stairways lined in gleaming tiles, with vivid murals and gilded statuary and an amazing library that wraps up the tour.

We spent an enjoyable hour + on this tour and would do it again! I'm sure we missed a lot of details while gaping at the beauty.

Cardiff castle has a mix of everything, There is plenty to see and do and lots of information boards around. You can have an audio guide that gives a brief explaination on the different areas around the castle. The only thing I would say is that it is a little expensive to get in; it cost us £42 for 2 adults and 3 children. We spent 3 hours there and stopped for lunch which again although a little pricey was far better quality than a lot of cafes attatched to other attractions. The kids loved it and really enjoyed the booklets they were given at the entrance and in the hall. would definitely recommend a visit.

Fab for history, can be a little pricey if in a large group. I'd advise you join Cadw and gain entry to many destinations in Wales for reduced rates.

Offers a museum, food with tours available. Well worth a visit by tourists. Sometimes over looked by locals.
