“Enjoyed our stay”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

We stayed two nights in early March and were happy with everything. Helen was on her own that weekend and gave us a warm welcome and all the information we needed. the room was lovely and we were very comfortable. We were delighted to have the car parking and also the free wifi. We would definitely recommend Hotel One Hundred.

My boyfriend and I stayed here last weekend, and we had a lovely time, The rooms were beautifully done out and very clean, and the welcome was exceptionally warm and friendly. Helene and Abi were always around to help us out with directions/stuff with the room, and we were never rushed even if we came down to (the plentiful and delicious) breakfast about 3 minutes before the allotted time. Good central location and no hassles at all. Highly recommended.

I could not agree more with Aidyonline, this place was exactly that - a house with rooms - some good and some really not so good stuff going on. I had booked on the strength of the high rating and reviews on this site, and as such perhaps I was expecting far more, the photos certainly give a differing impression. The location is via a very wide, busy, noisy road from Cardiff, thankfully the room we were given was not on the road side. The welcome was really warm, if a little intrusive - but sweet natured and well meant. We were given a room with a double bed and a single one, We are a couple and the extra bed was of no use whatsoever although it was promoted as such. The fact that neither one of us would have fitted in it...and then we come to the bed, It was not Kingsize but just your usual normal size double. I would not have minded so much, had we not been paying £80 on the second night for this. The room was simply not worth this and as Aidyonline says there were plenty of other hotels with rooms for less. But before all that, the room itself? The shower was ( as others have mentioned) very weak indeed, a mere drizzle and the top button fell off at the touch. There was one towel each, this was poor as I would expect a separate face towel. The toilet holder also fell off the wall and the sink shelf was at such an angle that certain items just slid off...not impressed. The kettle was on a stained surface and full of the previous users water, though this is minor it does show poor housekeeping.
The room was also really cold, admittedly we were there during a particularly cold spot but it meant we had to keep the heater on all the time, which clicked and whirred through the night and produced very dry heat. The bed as I said was not king size and I bought this up with the proprietor, she insisted that it was king size but was very gracious in saying we could check out and suggested other places. We did find another place at £59 and the contrast was stark. A superb clean large room, large bed with bath and power shower at £59, slap bang in the centre where the room at Hotel One Hundred felt cluttered, depressing....My main reasons for checking out were the bed size was not king, the bathroom was cramped and falling apart, the room at One Hundred was just not worth £80 - overpriced and the place itself did have rather a gloomy feel, the breakfast room being cold too. Sorry - as with Aidyonline, this was run by very good natured folk but who need to take stock of some of the guest's comments and address the room's failings or bring their prices down.

Dear guest,

Thank you for your comments. First I would like to point out out the beds measure 1.5m x 2m which is standard UK King size (large than a double bed). I think maybe 2 gentlemen would find sharing a superking more comfortable.

In relation to the price you paid £28 pp including breakfast. The second night was an online error and would have been corrected.

As you were unhappy about the bed we kindly cancelled your second night and found you alternative accommodation in the Mercure down the road from us – and yes you are right they are doing a special offer at the moment. That is not their usual price. The price you paid of £28 pp including breakfast is our usual price and we do not charge for extras like wifi or parking.

Thanks for mentioning small improvements that can be made. I will be sure to improve them as soon as possible.

I'm a little late with this review as I stayed there last July - nonetheless we had a very pleasant stay. The room was well done up, a little small, but good value for the price. Bathroom was quite large with heated towel racks. The staff was pleasant and courteous, helped us with our car parking, good breakfast, well located, what more can I say - would definitely recommend it.

I feel a bit bad writing this because the people running this place were lovely, but I have to be honest; would i want to stay in this place again, or would i recommend it to a friend? and the answer is no. If i had to stay here that would be ok, but i'd take my chances somewhere else.

I'm bemused that this place is 3rd on tripadvisor's Cardiff ranking. I usually stay in Premier Inn or Hilton etc, but this place was strongly recommended on Tripadvisor so i thought, boutique hotel, sounds nice, and i gave it a go.

The fact is, it's not a boutique hotel. it's more like a hostel - a more upmarket hostel but a hostel nonetheless. It's basically a 3 story Victorian-style house and the bedrooms are let out as rooms. I've stayed in hostels as a student that were similar. The room itself was ok. decent size, very gloomy - really needs a proper lightshade and a bright light, it's a bit depressing being in a gloomy room with a naked lightbulb hanging from a ceiling with a basic shade that doesn't cover it.

Facilities were so so. No wardrobe, just an odd thing that comes out of the wall that you can hang shirts on. A very small desk that you wouldn't want to have to use. very nice biscuits, oddly. A kettle and coffee/tea and cups. bedside lockers. Decent enough TV with remote control.

i stayed in a downstairs room so i could hear everyone as they came and went and the doors opened and closed, the walls were pretty thin. the bathroom was good enough but had an unmistakeable smell of mould, even though it looked clean. The bed itself was very good, no problem there. the shower was good enough. no bath unfortunately but that in itself is not unusual. there was free wireless which was good and fast.

the breakfast was decent, continental style, if you wanted a hot breakfast that was £5 extra. the dining area was big enough but very cold, i sat there freezing. There are no other facilities - no bar or restaurant or anything like that, it really is just a big house. A nice house, but just a house. Overall it felt like staying at your aunt's house in one of the spare rooms. and she had lots of lodgers. it didn't feel like staying in a hotel.

The lady who ran the place was very nice, a very pleasant lady. And her daughter seemed very nice too. And that's why i feel a bit bad writing an average review, but i have to be honest. I suspect a lot of the lovely reviews are because they are lovely people... but the 'hotel' just ain't! And when i look at the hotels i could have stayed in for the same price, it wasn't even good value either. sorry.

Room Tip: i was on the ground floor which was a bit noisy. don't know what the upstairs rooms were like.

Dear Guest,

Thanks for your review and posting such lovely photos.

We advertise Hotel One Hundred as a family run Bed and Breakfast. The Name’ hotel ‘is just our name.

All our past guests have not confused us with the Hilton Hotels or Premier Inns. We do not compete with multi-national Hotel Chains. Neither have we ever been confused with a hostel. We do not market ourselves as having a bar and restaurant like a Hilton hotel so I’m not sure why you commented on this.

We gave you free parking which would have cost you £20 in any Hilton. I also consider £48.00 for a King size bed with en suite bathroom and breakfast included to be actually good value. I checked the price of the Hilton and it was £99.00 without breakfast.

Our past guests have enjoyed our tastefully decorated and clean rooms. We offer a personal experience and that is priceless ;))

Kind Regards

Abi and Helene

Stayed here for two nights in January. This is a lovely b&b, close to the shops and restaurants on City Road but also an easy walk into town. Good breakfast too - we tried the full Welsh one day and the Continental the other and can recommend both. The owners are incredibly friendly, too - they really make the stay.

Few tiny niggles stops it being absolutely perfect (the shower wasn't great, and the room got quite cold at times, though it might have been that the house hadn't had a chance to warm up after the owners' break. Oh and it was snowing! Plenty of blankets to wrap up in, though) but nothing that would stop me coming back.

Highly recommended.

Thanks for writing such an informative review. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. We are in the process of changing our heating system to make it more comfortable for such cold winter nights.

Hope to see you again in the future

Kind Regards
