We stayed here for 2 nights, and got a room for two. We were a bit older than the college-aged majority of the guests, but still felt welcome and at home. Clean spaces, and a nice kitchen with a great breakfast. The first night there there was free cider an ale, and the second night a free spaghetti dinner for those who signed up. A nice end to a cold, wet, Welsh day. Shared living room space with great selection of movies and travel books, and Friendly owners always ready with a smile.

Attended Welsh for beginners course at Cardiff University 4/5th Jan 2013. Looking for economical accommodation came across RH backpackers. This is the most amazing find - what an absolute gem of a place. Wonderful warm welcome from Abie and Charlie and team. Very modern new interior, great dorm (female for 4) very modern new ktichen, dining/living room. Great decked garden for better weather. Lots of shower/loo rooms and loo only and shower only cubicles of a very high standard. Great free breakfast that would put most small hotels to shame. Fresh fruit salads, cereals, different breads and spreads , pastries and Welsh cakes, various yoghurts, fruit juices and as much tea and coffee as you could drink. Some evenings something was prepared for free, pasta the night before I arrived, apple tart and icecream the first night and if I had stayed on cider and nibbles on the Saturday. Free parking in Fitzhammon Embankment from 6pm - 8 am following morning and free parking all day around Clare Gardens which I took advantage of. 20 minute walk into town. Abie and Charlie were extremely friendly and helpful owners and nothing was too much trouble to make your stay warm, comfortable and a great experience. I would definately recommend this hostel to anyone thinking of staying in Cardiff for work/travel etc and am even thinking of staying again with our three grand children the next time we visit Cardiff. I have stayed in YHAs before but they don't match River House Backpackers. I met all nationalities, Italians, Spanish, French, South Korean, Anerican and English all who will take away the wonderful experience of staying at River House and a reflection on the sort of welcome they will get if they visit Cardiff. Thank you for providing such a very high standard of accommodation and service Diolch yn fawr iawn. Susan Davies, Stratford upon Avon

This hostel was like a home away from home. Charlie, Abi and their team were just lovely, answering any questions and even allowing me to leave my bags at the hostel after check out until my night bus arrived later that day.
The breakfast was just beautiful - lovely selection that had something for everyone (even vegemite for this Aussie). The hostel also does free food nights on occasion and I was lucky enough to be there for a pasta night.
The lounge room felt like I was living in my own home, the cats were just beautiful.
Rooms were lovely - plenty of room.
If I am ever back in Cardiff I'll be making a beeline back to the River House.

Very nice, very clean hostel. Great bathrooms and showers. The stadium is on the other side of the river and a 5minute walk from the hostel. Everything is in walking distance. Very quiet though and a bit awkward at times (I got in trouble by the owner for having my feet on the couch, we had been walking around all day and I honestly didn't even notice!). Also the card machine wasn't working the entire time we were there so we went on a wild goose chase that night to find one but all the atm's were maxed out due to the rugby..

I just returned home from traveling for a month and a half, and this hostel was the best I stayed in by far. The owners have it cleaned at least twice a day so it is always fresh and comfortable. The breakfast was hands down the best free breakfast I've had, offering yogurt, scones, fruit, juice, granola, and more. Kitchen is clean and spacious for cooking own meals, dining area is cozy, and hanging out in the tv room is a great way to meet other travelers. Also, Charlie, one of the owners, will call you dear and feed you chocolate cake.

I think what made this hostel one of best was that the staff obviously cared and took the time to make sure you were happy. Had great tips on places to go and places to eat. Even the hostel cat is friendly and adorable. Would come back in a heartbeat.

Hostel was really nice, free breakfast was amazing. The staff arent exactly the friendliest and They had issues with taking credit cards. And stayed here during the Rugby, so prices were a little over priced.

I stayed for one week in order to look for an accommodation in Cardiff. I had a thousand questions and all the stuff was super supportive and friendly. The hostle itself is very nicely decorated, high standard from bedroom to lounge and it has a very cosy atmosphere. The breakfast is great and several times we had the chance to try the homemade choclatcake which was great and had even a pizzanight together organised by Abi and Charly. Thank you for that wonderful time!!!
