Abi and charlie are very friendly and always available to provide any information you need, rooms are large and clean, bathrooms even though aren't in the rooms are tidy and clean.

Every morning you can have a really tasty breakfast and almost everyday afternoon a free course is served, such as pasta and salad or a tasty apple pie.

If outside it's raining no matter, at the riverhouse there is a wide lounge where watching tv or a movie.

And finally, their cats are so cute!

My husband and I traveled to Cardiff with our 3 children and we chose River House Backpackers because it was right across the river from the Millenium Stadium and Cardiff Castle. We have never taken the kids hosteling before so we were a bit nervous, but we had a great experience!

For starters, the owners Charlie & Abi were kind enough to make our room private, even though the room was for 6 people and we are a family of 5 -- so we didn't have to worry about a stranger in the 6th bed. Also, they loaned us a parking permit (with a refundable deposit of 40 euro) so we could park our car on a nearby street for the duration of our stay. There is also free WiFi, which everyone in the family loved :)

The room was comfortable and clean. Our room had 3 bunk beds, and the kids each took a top bunk and loved it. Pillows and linens are provided. The mattresses were a bit thin, but we managed. There are 6 lockers, 1 per bed, so you can lock your valuables up (they will issue you a lock for a 5 euro refundable deposit).

The showers and toilets are shared, and they were all very clean and well stocked with soap and toilet paper (we brought our own towels). Water pressure is nice and strong, and we never had to wait more than a minute for an empty stall. Also, it was just a short walk from our room to the bathrooms, so we felt comfortable letting the kids go in the middle of the night unaccompanied.

The rest of the hostel is as clean as the rooms and bathrooms. You can relax in front of the TV in the front living room, or make some tea and coffee in the kitchen and sip it in the breakfast room (which also has a tv).

The daily breakfast is excellent -- yogurt, granola, cereal, fruit, pastries, toast, Welsh cakes, juice, plus all kinds of spreads and butter, more than enough to eat! They didn't offer a pizza dinner while we were there, but on one night there was free apple pie (we were eating out that night so we didn't get to try it).

All in all, it's a great place to stay. Everyone is friendly and respectful, no loud partying or shouting that you might expect from a hostel. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Travel with a friend or two or three or four, and ask if a room with capacity equal to your party...

I've stayed in a fair few hostels within the last year and this is among the best. I arrived in Cardiff without any accommodation booked and I couldn't have been luckier in finding this hostel. I called them, and a nice lady gave me directions from the station. I stayed for one night, then returned later for four nights.
The hostel feels more like a big home, with a cosy tv room, well equipped kitchen, dining area, patio out the back, comfortable rooms and clean bathrooms.
The staff are friendly, professional and very helpful, and are dedicated to keeping the hostel clean and tidy. There is a good selection of books and dvds, the wifi is always quick and reliable even when the place is full, and there is cheap food available and free tea and coffee.
The lockers are a good size and hold plenty of valuables and security in general is very good. On top of that there is a very friendly, relaxed vibe. There are a couple of cool cats who wander around. Furry feline types.
The hostel is right across the river from the Millenium Stadium and is within walking distance of everything.
And it was cheap as!

I stayed for 8 weeks whilst working in Cardiff and apart from the occasional snorer I have nothing but praise for this place. Its cheap, clean and they get everyone together with free food 3 or 4 times a week. Free wifi, cooking facilities, a really nice garden to chill in. Nice, clean and numerous bathrooms, a big telly and full sky satellite TV - the list goes on - just watch out for the uncovered hot water pipe in the shower - ooch! my bum!!!
:)

Room Tip: the single rooms are good too and worth the money...

Having never stayed in a hostel before I was a little apprehensive about staying in one for a trip to Cardiff, with great reviews on various websites, including being number 4 in the world, it turned out to be the best decision I have ever made, staying for 4 nights. The hostel is close to the train station with a view of the Millenium Stadium opposite with other attractions a short walk away and the staff were friendly and helpful. I stayed in a 4 bed room and the room was clean and tidy with modern decor and the same could be said about the bathroom. A continental breakfast is provided from 7am-10am and there is free pizza for the guests and free wifi. Not suprised this was voted number 4 in the world! Highly recommended!!

My husband and I stayed two nights at this hostel in the beginning of June. It's a lovely place! Charlie and Abi and their staff were so friendly and helpful and really made you feel welcome. The private twin room we stayed in had bunk beds. The room was a bit small, but it was clean and the beds were comfortable. There was a bathroom right next to our room and plenty of (clean!) showers/toilets in the building. Great breakfast in the morning! Free Wi-Fi both in the rooms and in the common areas. Much appreciated free luggage storage. Location was great, close to the train station and the city center and a lot of the sights. Wouldn't hesitate to stay at the River House again.
