Owner description: The fortress sprawls over a huge area making it the largest castle in Wales. Like the famous cheese, the castle has long been synonymous with Caerphilly. It dominates. Hogs the limelight. Think slumbering giant awaiting a call to arms. It's also a great backdrop for TV and film. It secured a starring role recently in the popular BBC TV series Merlin.

We visited the castle on a Sunday morning and can't say anything bad about it other than your feet will be very tired afterwards :)
Plenty of parking, nice walk around the castle to get views from all angles and an idea of the scale.
Very good value for money on the entrance fee, in England it would have been at least £10 per person more!
Lots of nooks and crannies to explore, so the castle can absorb large crowds.
Spiral staircases not so easy to climb, but worth the views
Clean loos
Easy to find from the motorway, well signposted

Some parts are ruins, some have been restored. No parking on site, and information is limited. All of the weapons are kept outside the castle, slightly strange. It's dark and bleak on a wet day, and gives the impression that it's a castle for defence rather for living in.

We visited this on a lovely sunny afternoon. It's a really lovely castle. Although some of it is in ruins it doesn't matter as .there are parts that have been restored. There was a lot to see and it was good trying to work out how people must have lived there. The guy in the shop was really helpful answering our questions. Altogether a great castle and we left wishing we could have stayed longer.Well worth the £5.

My friends and I spent an afternoon here and it was far better than I expected. The website said entry was free but we had to pay £5 but this was ok actually. Although parts of this castle are in ruins there is still a good part in good restorative order. It's a huge castle with many rooms and places to explore. The information is a bit limited but in a funny way this allowed us to use our imagination. Once we saw all rooms and all levels we then got to explore the weapons outside :) all in all quite good fun.
