Stayed here for a three night break July 15 -18. Staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Booked a 'Superior' room and was allocated room 64. Well decorated and furnished. Bed and pillows were comfortable. Maid did a great job in cleaning. The room and bathroom were immaculate.

Breakfast was enjoyable and hot food cooked to order. The head waitress and her team were quick and efficient and did a great job.

Ordered some Bar Meals, these were served quickly by efficient bar staff who were eager to please. The quality and quantity of the food was good.

The hotel was busy with guests. There was, also, a School Prom Night on the Friday and a Wedding Reception on the Saturday. But, were not disturbed and still enjoyed a quiet nights sleep. Our allocated room was well away from the functions.

The indoor pool area was excellent.

Just one thing that could have been better....the Crane Room decor is tired and really does need a re-vamp.

Enjoyed our stay.

One of the worst greetings I’ve received absolutely no recognition of the Diamond Rewards status, I wasn’t asked for the loyalty card until I contacted reception from my room to request the competently news paper and then they insisted I came back down to show the card even though they could see the Diamond level via the on line booking. I was even directed to the wrong floor for my room.

The room had a dank musty smell and the only ventilation was by opening a 6’ patio door but as on the ground floor I had to close it at night.

The shower gel supplied was already half used by someone else, the tap pillar rotated around on the basin there was mould around the tiles and ceiling in the shower and the TV came out of the 80’s.

Not the best.

As a regular Best Western guest and a Diamond Reward member I am sorry that this was not recognised when you arrived at the hotel. As you mentioned, your Reward number would have been included on your reservation and all of our front office staff should clearly understand the benefits associated with each Reward level. Your comments have been discussed with all of the relevent staff.

We are in the process of refurbishing all of our Executive bedrooms and have now completed all of the rooms on the first floor. The Executive rooms on the ground floor with patio doors are the next rooms to be refurbished. Following the refurbishment of our Leisure Club we are also filling in the outside pool and landscaping the area outside these Executive rooms.

I have passed on your specific room comments to our Head Housekeeper and our Maintenance Manager to check all of the ground floor Executive bedrooms. All of our refurbished bedrooms now have large wall mounted LCD televisions. We would be happy to offer you a complimentary upgrade to a newly refurbished Executive bedroom for any future stays at our hotel in line with your Diamond Reward level status.

Just paid another visit to this Hotel and as usual enjoyed it. The bedrooms are spacious and airy ( Room 10 is a favourite ), linen really clean, bathroom fine, decent towels. The leisure area is a bonus and nice to spend a relaxing couple of hours. The food is really nice, be it bar snack or restaurant, with decent prices, and the breakfast is good. Have always found the staff polite and helpful. Yes, it's rather tired in places but like most hotels, its under constant refurbishment. The grounds could do with a sprucing, particularly the outdoor pool area and inner garden, a view which looks rather sad from the rooms in that area. Also, it's in a lovely area. All in all, it's a decent little hotel.

Room Tip: Give the hotel a ring and tell them what you'd like, they always try to please

We held our daughters wedding reception here yesterday and it was a wonderful event. We found the staff especially ,Mark ,so helpful.
Everything was so well done, staff attentive and polite but never pushy.Food was outstanding, all our guests were so impressed and yet compared with other venues it was modestly priced. All the little touches ,special service for the Bride and Groom, assistance on every level to make the day special.
We stayed the night as did the Bride and Groom and some of the guests and no one had any complaints. The Bridal suite had a geourgous four poster and even our standard room was really roomy and comfortable. We had breakfast in the resteraunt and even though we went in at the end of the service time and they had every bedroom in use the tables were spotless and the buffet of continetal and cereals etc was full and it all looked fresh.Yet again Mark our MC from the wedding reception was on duty and once more the food and service first class. The Bride and Groom enjoyed a full breakfast with all options available to them in their suite.
We used the pool , jacuzzi and sauna and would recommend it as a way to relax and get rid of any post party twinges!
All of our family and friends were made to feel special and we cannot praise the Heronston highly enough. Our only daughteras wedding was a thoroughly memorable day for all the right reasons.

Visited this hotel over the bank Holiday weekend, the same time as last year. Would agree with other reviews that it is being refurbished and the part we were in seemed to have been done, but I do feel they could have done something with the now unused outside pool area, if only fill it and put some grass or slabs over. Indoor pool etc was as nice as last time but we were disappointed with Breakfast. On both days we went down at 9.00 and there were queues for tables both days. The 2 waiting staff were rushed off their feet clearing and relaying tables. They were also responsible for refilling all of the hot & cold buffet and with the Hotel being nearly full meant that a number of items had to be asked for (Plates for 1!) I overheard someone complaining at Reception on the Sunday saying they had to wait 50 minutes for a table. A couple of extra staff and more smaller tables would solve this I feel. However, the hot food was very nice so it was not all bad.

I am sorry that you experienced problems with the breakfast service over the Bank Holiday weekend. On one of the mornings there was a last minute staff shortage due to illness, but your comments have been discussed with both our Restaurant Manager and Food and Beverage Manager.

Travelling on business, the things I'm looking for in a hotel are a clean room with pleasant functional bathroom / shower, a comfortable bed, and the ability to use my laptop. So how did the Heronston do?

Well, as others have commented, the hotel is a few years old (I'd put it more at 70's), and is currently being refurbished... so lets start there! My room had been "refurbished", which means it had a new (light wood) room door, new bathroom suite, new furniture, walls etc repainted. Sadly it is let down by things like: the bathrrom door is still the dark, 1970's Sapelle wood door (and slightly damaged too); the light above the bathroom mirror is the old, dirty one; the bath panels look original (ok, nicely repainted, but still dated); the wall-mounted hair dryer was a dirty colour, and should have been replaced years ago; there are nice new light switches in the room, but the phone socket was still original... and rather yellowed. The room furniture, whilst new, was all dark wood (as it most of the wood in the public areas). In the public areas, you'll find things like old signs on the wall, just painted around.

Ok, maybe the person designing the refurb is still stuck in the 80s? So a reasonable refurb, but shame about the 10% of bits that got missed, and the corners cut. And shame it doesn't feel more "up to date".

I think you get the idea by now!

Apart from that, the room was clean, had a thermostat - pleasantly set at 15C -so the room was not at all hot (the way I like it), and the room was a reasonable size, and the place was pretty quiet (yes, there is a train line to the rear: I heard one train, but it wasn't at all loud or annoying)

So how did it manage on my 3 needs?

Well, the shower (think double bath taps with the flexible hose coming out) was great for 7 ft tall people... the shower head "rail" started an inch from the ceiling, and came down 18" from there... and that's where the soap dish was too - shame I'm only 5ft4ins tall! The shower pressure was merely "adequate", and controlled by the bath taps. On a good note, the temperature WAS easy to set, and was very stable.

The bed was, as in many hotels, a very cheap one. New, but cheap. WHY? This is a BEDroom! I come here to SLEEP! So why is the bed one with a solid base, and the cheapest possible mattress? Bedding was a sheet with a thin quilt (not a duvet), which was about right for this time of year. Sleep quality was about "average" for a hotel...

For working there is a desk of a very adequate size (better than a few places I've stayed), but sadly let down by the lack of a mains power socket - the nearest was 2 metres away, behind the TV! The FREE Wireless internet signal was strong, and whilst my iPod Touch connected straight away, my laptop (normally no problems with wireless) was connecting, but not getting an IP address. Well, no use asking any hotel to fix THAT, they wouldn't know an IP address from a cylinder head... but a bit of "hacking / playing" let me get connected fine.

Other things.... the TV was an old CRT jobbie (no big deal for me). Wardrobe large and clean. Tea / coffee as expected. Nice "comfy chair" and the desk chair was nice too. No lift in my part of the hotel, don't know about other parts.

Went out for dinner but had breakfast at the hotel: a choice of a good buffet, or cooked food on demand. Apart from my croisant being a bit dry, breakfast was quite reasonable, with a fair choice. The day's waiting staff all seemed pleasant.

No problems with the reception staff either.

So, how would I summarise the place? The place was clean, and if you can ignore the generally dark wooden 70s decor, and the non-refurbed bits don't worry you, then at £60 for a single night, it is very reasonable value, and definitely better than many of the "horror-story hotels" you read about on Trip Advisor!

Would I return? Yes I would.

Thank you for your comprehensive review of our facilities. Although the room you stayed in had been redecorated, it is not one of our newly refurbished bedrooms. All of our bedrooms were redecorated and some had newly refurbished bathrooms, but we are currently refurbishing our Executive double bedded rooms which are located at the other end of the hotel where the lift is located. We have now completed the refurbishment of half of the Executive bedrooms and I would welcome you to come and stay in one of them and to give such an honest and comprehensive review as you did before.
