We have just had a really good time on the beautiful 'Mon and Brec' Canal in Gilwern Princess from Roadhouse Narrowboats. As well as having fine weather the Boat was just right - well equipped and designed for the shallow and twists and turns of the canal.
Nigel and Sally of Roadhouse Narrowboats couldn't have been more helpful and professional, making sure we knew where everything was and how it all worked - and it did: we wanted for nothing.
If anyone is thinking of doing this canal we recommend Roadhouse and the 'Mon and Brec' - the canal only has 6 locks and just the 2 of us managed these easily.
Rob and Liz.

As veteran narrow boat holidaymakers, this was yet another trip on the 'Mon + Brec' but a first time on the Road House barges. The craft are ideally suited to [and built for] this canal, and whilst small - they fit perfectly and are easy to manoeuvre, turn in the limited sized winding holes, and rarely get stuck -unlike some of the other large boats that the other hire companies use. Whilst quite old, they are so well designed and lovingly kitted out by their maker - who we understand had run his boats on the canal for 25 years - and it shows in the clever and homely details - not flash or glitzy - just cosy and efficient.

The new[ish] proprietors could not have been more helpful and accommodating

If you want a trip [we did 7 days] from a well situated base in a boat of character and charm - then do check out their 4 boats, as well as the bigger 'commercial' operators - I think you'll be captivated, just as us 5 friends were

We have just spent a week on this canal in a narrowboat hired from Cambrian Cruisers. They are based near Brecon, the opposite end to all the other hire companies. It is a family affair and everything was excellent, especially the free bottle of wine. The boat was very good with plenty of room and was a lovely home-from-home.

The canal was very peaceful at this time of the year and the views were amazing. The only downside was that it really needs to be dredged a bit, as it is easy to end up grounding the boat when passing another boat and having to 'pole' off the bottom. All part of the enjoyment. There are only six locks (five are altogether), so good as a taster for a novice.

Plenty of pubs on the way, with a variety of local shops within walking distance. You may be lucky to get a TV signal, we didn't! Suggest take some DVDs.

Would love to go back one Autumn.

First time we have visited Brecon and the canal and it won't be our last. Parking is very cheap. We took bikes and dog, it was lovely - weather fab and lots of people on the canal. When we return again we will hire a boat. We only got down to the first lock and returned as I was on foot. My only gripes were the lack of bins!!! One at beginning of trail and then none until you reached the first lock - as it was 2 miles in between you definitely need more.
Also lots of dogs not on leads - my dog is fab with other dogs, I've certainly never had any bother previously but I still pop him on lead when near by other dogs as you just never know. Maybe I am just too over cautious?
Over all a lovely day out and looking forward to returning.

Just returned from a day on the canal having hired a boat for the day.....what a beautiful day out. This is an ideal day out for anyone and everyone, couple, friends, family or even a walk down the canal on your own, you can even take a picnic on the boats. There are stop off points at public houses although we stopped off at the royal Oak and i would NOT recommend this place. There was a menu of about 5 items for lunch and they stopped erving food at 1:45pm!

We spent the whole day on the boat on the canal, guiding ourselves through the bridges and working the locks. Amazing views of the breacon beacons, Pen Y Fan, aquaduct, local farms and fields - just breathtaking.

A must for everyone...
