The good points - very large, light, airy rooms in historic building in the centre of Brecon, reasonably priced. Free fast Wi-Fi. Varied selection of well priced food and drink. Kettle tea coffee in rooms.
Not so good - scuff marks on the walls, two patches on the ceiling where leak damage had not been repainted, bathroom grout grotty and the whole bathroom could be cleaner. TV screen v small, no lift or offer of help with bags, restaurant understaffed - waited 45 minutes for a simple main one day and the next did not bother as was told there would be a wait of up to an hour.Hotel has only one key per room and no spare. Building closes overnight no staff on premises. No fridge.

Spend 1 night in the Wellington. (£100/pn) Room very small, bathroom very small, clean tidy no different to any proper travelodge. Had dinner in hotel down stairs, wife ordered paella, so ridiculously hot she couldn't eat it. Manager tried justifying it at first, took it away and acknowledged the mistake. My burger and chips was nothing to write home about, dry, oily (typical). Restaurant also not very tidy, tables sticky and so-on....short staffed???

Left the place not feeling like I got value for money at-all.

Room (23) was very hot, lacked airco, with outside temperatures round 17 degrees Celsius. Only window offered roof with blowing ventilator from the kitchen en several chimney's. Staff wouldn't change rooms, said they were full-booked. For 75 pound very overrated. Nice streetfront, nice sirloin steak...

After reading the mixed reviews decided to go ahead anyway and book The Wellington for one night on Sunday before going to the Royal Welsh as it is not too far and all accommodation near the Showground booked well in advance. Was pleasantly surprised with our double room on the top floor. The room had been recently refurbished and everything looked new and very clean, could not fault it. It would have been nice to have a hairdryer but no big deal if you take your own. Had a meal on the premises which was typical Brains pub grub. Unfortunately didn't have the breakfast as they didn't start serving until 8am and we had to leave before then. It would have been nice if they could have offered us a continental breakfast delivered to our room earlier, after all we had paid for Bed&Breakfast.

Room Tip: Ask for room 24 which is a Double on the back of the hotel.

It is not easy to find good accommodation in Brecon in the summer. The good Bed and Breakfasts (ie excellent reviews on Trip Advisor) are booked up well in advance. I needed one room for one night at relatively short notice and The Wellington came up with mixed reviews on Trip Advisor so I decided to take the plunge and booked a twin room for one night.

The Wellington is a pub/accommodation right in the centre of Brecon. It is opposite a taxi rank and if you are unfortunate enough to have a room at the front of the hotel on a Saturday night (as we did) you will be entertained all night by young revellers screaming and shouting while they make their way from pub to pub and then finally to the taxi rank. This is of course not the fault of the hotel but in the room we stayed in there wasn't even secondary double glazing to block the noise out. It was a hot July Saturday as well and we had to keep the window shut......but it certainly didn't block out the noise.

Reading the various reviews on Trip Advisor it seems that there are different standards of accommodation at The Wellington. Some reviews refer to refurbished rooms, that may well be the case but ours was certainly one that hadn't been refurbished. (Room 16). It was a basic twin (Cost £70 per room). The beds were comfortable enough, we had tea making facilities and the towels were very good quality. However the room itself was dated and shabby and boy did the windows need a clean from the outside (as they face the square that really needs to be done on a regular basis). The skirting board in both the room and the bathroom would benefit from a dust and the air vent in the bathroom definitely needed the dust cleaned away from it. The bathroom itself although very basic was clean enough but it took us a while to work out how to turn the shower into a bath as the fixings were a bit wobbly (but did work eventually). The radiator in the bedroom looked like it had been painted over and over and was now peeling quite badly. If you don't mind basic then it was good enough but I have stayed at a B and B in Brecon for £10 cheaper where the accommodation surpassed this in leaps and bounds.

Onto some positives. I found the staff to be very good. We ate at the hotel in the evening and the meal was fine, standard pub fare but very good, I would eat here again. We did have a few problems at breakfast in the morning as an army of ants had invaded our allotted table, so we moved to a vacant one and I did inform the waitress! Unfortunately this did lead to us not having our breakfast order taken so I had to go to the bar to remind them......but to be fair it was immediately remedied! Breakfast was good, cereal and fruit juice laid out (with the option of a continental breakfast if you preferred). We went for the full English and it was lovely as was the toast and preserves......and real proper filter coffee!

My advice if you choose to stay here. Ask if you are having a refurbished room (I think they are probably the ones you will pay £90 for) or settle for a very basic room that you will find fault with! Also make sure you aren't booking at the front of the hotel on a Saturday night ( but it may well be fine the rest of the week).

Room Tip: Avoid room 16 at the front of the hotel on a Saturday night
