The attraction is in two parts_ a free museum and a tour that gets progressively cheaper the more people you buy tickets for. The your lasts about one and a quarter hours and includes two films a well as a trip into the mountain to see the pipework and generators. We enjoyed ourselves.

Took a trip around this site and it was well organised and informative. After the trip you look back at the mountain and wonder at the skill they used in constructing it.

An interesting tour of a generating system that drains a high lake to a much lower one on demand so that power demands can be met nearly instantaneously and then refills the upper lake at night when there is a glut of power needing to be consumed. Now in operation nearly 3 decades the system has paid for itself many times over. Put on a hardhat and ride the bus through the tunnels to see the turbines and generators and past the lake.

We managed to obtain tickets (£7.75 each) as this attraction was very popular owing to torrential rain outside - and it's dry inside the mountain! There was a chatty and knowledgable guide and an introductory video followed by a bus ride into the mountain to see the galleries, turbines and generators which generate electrical power within seconds for use on the National Grid.

It's all driven by water from a reservoir at the top of the mountain which once through the turbines finds its way to the lake in the valley from where the water is pumped back up to the top on the equivalent of Economy 7 Tariff. So the power does not come free, but it does come instantaneously which is the requirement when we all make a cup of tea at half-time during football matches and at peak times.

All very interesting and impressive - the whole thing is a huge technical achievement - and it showed that sometimes major capital projects in the UK make a lot of sense and are well executed. Overall then, well worth a visit especially for those interested in industry and things technical.
