A house previously associated with a community of artists, Pengwern provided a stylish, comfortable, friendly and relaxed base for four days of extensive walking/scrambling. Nothing was too much trouble and our needs were anticipated and more than fulfilled. The breakfasts were excellent and the recommendations for restaurants in the village were highly appreciated.

Just loved the Studio, a self catering idyll. Very welcoming, everything we needed with help on hand, but not intrusive. I fancied living there permanently! Very well situated nr. to Betwys y coed, and therefore easy to reach other places of interest.

After a long, tiring journey and although we arrived early we were given a warm welcome and shown our very relaxing rooms. And such great bathrooms! Everything we needed was there. Plus the sofas, books, DVDs and magazines in the downstairs sitting room, plus the perfectly cooked breakfast, plus local history - and it turned out that our Welsh family (we had come visiting) had known Maggie Plas many years ago. We could only stay for two nights - wish it had been longer. A shimmering rainbow stretched across the valley on the morning we were leaving. I hope we'll be back.

Went for a couple of nights - partner booked as a surprise for a birthday stay with our teenage son. Greeted with candle for my birthday cake and a pot of tea! Went to room and flowers and a birthday note left. What lovely touches.
The rooms were tasteful, roomy, lovely en suite bathrooms, comfortable beds - no tv in rooms which was fantastic, but if you did want to succumb there was a magnificent lounge with a range of dvds.
Views were gorgeous and at night the bats came out!
Breakfast was amazing. Home made glamorgan sausages for the veggie.
Couldnt have been more helpful without being overly attentive and the attention to detail all throughout the accommodation was superb. Internet access for the teenager.
All in all a very idyllic place to be and we will definitely go back.

Outstanding accommodation & no wonder they are recommended in both Michelin & Rough Guide.
The location is wonderful (make sure you book taxis if you need but there is a pub up the road) the rooms immaculate & breakfast sets you up for the day.
Gwawr & Ian have got the most gorgeous place & are superb unobtrusive & thoughtful hosts, the garden is amazing too….. if you stay in Betws this is THE place to stay, a days walking, dinner in the bistro (in Betws) and a hot bath overlooking the mountains back at Pengwern…… Carling doesn’t do country house accommodation but if they did…….. etc.
Simply could not fault this place…. and really can’t wait to go back….

We really enjoyed our stay here. We were welcomed by the friendly owner Gwawr with refreshments and welsh cakes and useful information about the area. Our room was very spacious and comfortable, with an additional dressing area and steps leading to the bathroom. The view from the room was lovely overlooking the Lledr valley in a peaceful quiet, location with scenic walks to the Conwy Falls and Fairy Glen, but not far from Betws- y- Coed. We awoke to the sound of an orchestra of birdsong from the adjacent woods. Choices for breakfast were very good and we were pleased with the vegetarian breakfast with homemade glamorgan sausages.

We really recommend Pengwern for a relaxing break. comfort and peaceful surroundings and for the warm hospitality from the owners.

To break-up the journey from London to Holyhead my wife and I decided to stay overnight in Snowdonia. Having spent hours on the internet trying to find an ideal B&B that was prepared to take a single night booking we were delighted to book in at the Pengwern Country House. From the initial email and phone call with Gwawr, the owner, (and the subsequent detailed booking confirmation email) I knew I had made the right decision.
We were greeted with a very welcoming pot of tea and Welsh Cakes and were then shown up to the wonderful Richard Gay Somerset Room, which was perfect. The views in the late afternoon were impressive but were surpassed by the scene that met us when we drew the curtains in the morning – looking down the valley to see a rainbow coming to ground was breath-taking.
Gwawr was the perfect hostess giving just the right level of attentiveness without being intrusive. And the Welsh breakfast was the ideal way to carry on the day.
My wife and I would not hesitate to return to the Pengwern Country House – next time we will try to stay a lot longer!
