The Gwydir Forest is a wonderful resource for those wanting something different to the high mountains or the crowded shopping streets.
Natural Resources Wales have created lots of lovely waymarked trails throughout the forest for the public to enjoy, some visit secluded lakes, some direct you to extinct industrial sites but most are devoid of the crowds.
I advise obtaining a guide for the walks from the Tourist Information Centre and make sure you have a map of the area and the ability to use it.
My only complaint is that wherever you got you can still here the annoying and intrusive 'toot-toot' of the miniature railway down below in the village of Betws-y-Coed.

We took the yellow trail from Betws-y-Coed yesterday. The walk is classed as strenuous. I have to say that it was hard going in places but it was worth it. We came across a lovely lake, pieces of art in the forest, fab views from various vantage points and a lovely waterfall. The smell of the forest was amazing.

Lovely wooded area and lake/s with 3 various footpaths. We opted for the yellow route which is a circular path round the lake. Easy to walk and follow. Had we not climbed snowdon the day before we would've done all 3.
The area is very beautiful. Car parking was free and there's public toilets which were very well maintained.

Surrounding Betws-y-Coed this offers plenty of walking opportunities along well signposted routes. Try the walk to Llyn Elsi for some great views and an enjoyable walk.
